Partner Claming Social Welfare Query?

Hi there I had a few questions, that I was wondering that I could get answered. My partner claims for me as adult dependent and her child as child dependent. We have both been looking for jobs locally and more afield and can't find anything at the moment. We are thinking of going to some up coming car boot sales in the next few months and wondering if claiming job seekers are you entitled to sell things from you own from your property or do you have to declare you are going to one and state to the social welfare each time how much you earn?
If there is a certain amount you can earn before you loose any money it would be greatly appreciated if someone could clear up this matter. It would not be on a weekly basis maybe once a month.

Ok so are you saying as long as you own it whether you bought it or you made something and want to sell it then it should be fine? And I don't mean selling Illegal things like pirated movies or music just a few home made things.

Ah ok this would be our first time but your saying if it was a more regular thing like going once a month that wouldn't be allowed then?

If you are showing what they call 'badges of trade', then you are self employed. The odd sale here and there, to offload items etc, would be ok.

Google 'badges of trade'. It'll give you an idea of the concept.

Yes what we are thinking is going once maybe go a few other times but if it goes well then we are going to have to look into schemes on how to set up a small business. This time its just to see if I can sell a few things and if it goes well we will go down the right paths to setting something up that resemble a small business thanks for the help lads.

It is originally a tax concept. Basically what it means is Welfare ask themselves a few questions so they can form a view as to whether you are self employed or not.

Practically, if you are selling every now and then, no problem. If you are in any doubt, the sensible thing would be to disclose what you are doing to the hatch over your claim.
Also, use common sense. If you are trading, then you are trading. Most business ventures are loss making in the first year. It's hard.

Know this however - it is your responsibility on this, so they don't have to give you a view or opinion when you tell them. If it subsequently transpired that you were deemed to be trading, you can't rely on having told them, but it would likely knock a bit off your bill that you did disclose it if you get me.

Ok well we are only going to see if anyone buys anything if it doesn't go well then we won't pursue it more, or look into setting a small business up possibly through the link provided. I recently went to the social welfare and stated that I was going to go to the car boot to sell and it could be once off or I may go again. All they stated was my girlfriend was to write a written note, stating how much we make and they said that was fine and if we were to go again do the same. So are you telling me if you went once a month to car boots around that it is ok to sell stuff? What would be the limit of the amount of times you can sell before it would be classified as a business.

The car boot sale went pretty bad the cost to get in was ten euro but only made 7 do I still need to go down to the social welfare and state how much money I made or not bother?
