Surprised no one has got the ball rolling on this. Absolute NAP of the festival is that we'll get some whinger complaining about the quality of the racing at hand :pac: Let's be realistic though, while it's no Cheltenham, the racing is absolutely nowhere near as bad as made out to be. With Dermot Weld flying at the moment, one of the rumours I've been hearing is that he hasn't left himself with a whole lot of ammunition for Galway. Whether this is true or not remains to be seen. Racing Post had a very good interview with Weld as to what he feels are his best chances at winners, well worth checking out. As for finding winners, I generally keep my ear close to the ground here in Galway, but the amount of tips I've been getting is ridiculous. For 1 race tomorrow, I was given 3 in the same race :pac:

Anyway, I've the week off work tomorrow and will be attending most days. Have my selections picked and will post them up shortly.

Missed the RP interview with Weld. Did he give good mentions to any horses?

He has four or five favs tomorrow so will be interesting. Gonna back him in the first and the last for sure. Quick Jack is getting backed already down to 9-2 from 7's Martins horse in the big one

Won't be going wild on anything this week but do a few for interest. Denis hogans Ridestan in the first is fancied for a place by owners and if all is right will run in a couple days on flat which that do fancy. Will chance a small punt on him, Morga looks a cracking mare tho.

Massini's Trap @14/1 might go well and pennys on my old pal Fosters cross @20/1.

I fully expect Weld to have a big week and am told to watch out for his 2yo colts. Will be very hard to get any value on his horses this week.

The problem this week is everybody has a "Tip". GL all

Wouldn't listen to a word Weld says. The last two years his 'banker' has been done

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,681 ✭✭✭BumperD

Do the opposite of what weld says, you won't fare too bad.

Money for Henry Higgins in the first 14s into 15/2!

Of course, you take everything with a pinch of salt. With that said, if you back Weld blindly and get in with early prices, you are guaranteed to be up cash backing off a level stake.

Its a long week. The first two days are a bookies benefit. I generally keep the powder dry until Wednesday as its a hard week to come out on top. Digging a hole early can shred the confidence :).

5:10 - Weld has won the this race from 4 of the last 5 years, but Manhattan Swing looks to be one of the weakest entrants he's had yet in what looks a very competitive race. Going to have to try and find some value, Erlkonig looks to be the one. Has beaten Mckinley and Polished Rock recently, has better looking form than Ridestan and Henry Higgins. If form holds, then I feel it's between this and Morga for the honours tomorrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,931 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

5:40 - Lottery of a race if I ever saw one. Think it's very convenient that Who's Cross has just dropped into the ratings for this race with an absolute non-trier of a race a few weeks back. Horse has been doing the rounds with a few trainers, but should be more competitive than what the odds suggest in lower grade company. Trainer only has 2 declarations for Galway, so that suggests he's not sending these 2 out just for the benefit of some schooling. Hopefully it can give a good show at a massive price.

6:10 - Going for Grecian Tiger in this one. Think Robbie McNamara would have taken this ride but not able to make the weight. This horse was viewed as a future stable star when it first got a run out, but by and large has been disappointing. Tomorrow sees it stepping up to a more suitable trip and hopefully pitted against weaker opposition with weight going in its favour. Worry is that it has been well beaten by Quick Jack before and seeing the deluge of money for it suggests that Grecian Tiger has its work cut out for it. Have taken the 12/1 (Ladbrokes) on this one now, don't think that will last.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,931 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

8:15 - Call Vinnie in the bumper. When Robbie McNamara tips a horse, it's usually does the business.

Anyone think Sports Line might be worth a few sheckles in the 540, he is 43lbs lower than when mullins had him. He is having his second run with headgear and tongue tie, last time out he was beaten 7L and you would assume this has been his target.

Going to have a small ew, 22s looks a decent price and worth the risk.

Moon dice looks good value to me. Have taken 33s. Pp money back of 2nd or 3rd. Only 25s though.

Nothing fancy today Artful Artist, Jamaica and Call Vinner Treble at 9/1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,772 ✭✭✭byronbay2

Jamaica being backed as if victory is inevitable - 11/10 this morning, best price 4/6 now!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭rossom

6.45 looks a right old minefield. Paul Flynn said in a bit with the RP that he'd be very disappointed if he didn't run a very big race. Clearly likes the track a lot and I was on him when he won the hurdle so at 33s I've had a small play.

Also had a small e/w on the old boy Foster's Cross who won this a few years ago, looks on an ok mark of 80 and who is well drawn to attack from stall 6. I also like English raider Swnymor (and about another 2 or 3 others) so it's certainly not a race to get too involved in!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭rossom

The opener looks a strong contest and I think Manhattan Swing would need to be pretty smart to win this on his hurdling debut. I think the form of Morga 3/1 looks very decent and she'd be my idea of the winner.

In the 7.15 I am liking tom dooley
Edit just seen it tiped in the star as well, dont no if thats a good thing or bad

Any tips for the races this evening that's worth a place or each way bet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 576 ✭✭✭mick malones mauser

Nothing original but I was told Tony Martin is well worth following this week
Artful Artist and quick Jack have been well backed but his outsiders might be worth covering each way also.

But its Galway, wouldnt be surprised if the Weld hotpot was beaten in the bumper.Hope not as I have it in a treble

Not putting it in the tips thread because it's not real info but i am after being told by 3 or 4 people to back Quick Jack. He was well supported overnight and looks short in a tough race.

A shrewd judge I know personally but cannot post link as would breach charter:
    Manhattan Swing
    Marchese Marconi e/w
    Spacious Sky e/w
    Expensive Taste
    Annus Mirabilis

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,243 ✭✭✭Guffy

think he was a tip by Ruby on PP too...

Does anyone have any joy at the other tracks when these bigger meetings are on. It's like the bookies are napping and just concentrating on the festival. Seem to fund my festivals by backing the 'sideshow' races.

Streets of NewYork was being talked up by the owner last week, saying it was their best chance of the week

    Henry Higgins non runner.

I'd be in agreement with you, I reckon she could have a decent NH future and think she'll take a world of beating

I also like Dun Scaith in the 2nd, the drop back to 2m will be right up it's street, I can see it travelling sweetly to the bend and hopefully seeing it out up the hill

Settled on erlkonig ew in first
Sports line ew second and moon dice ew in feature. Good start would be handy.

I usually have only one bet at the Galway crapfest - Weld's in the C&G maiden on the opening evening. Even though Postulation has ground to make up on Jamaica from their Curragh maiden, I reckon he's starting to become value at 15/8.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,941 ✭✭✭krustydoyle

Is Welds in the 1st a penalty kick because Russell got off of Morga.
Morga looks very progressive so it stands out that davy isn't on now

The word for Erlkonig around carlow the last week is mad, so im on that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭rossom

I'd say the reason why Russell is off Morga is because he'll be on all Weld's this week. We'll find out very shortly!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,474 ✭✭✭longshotvalue

    Galway 6:45

    Marchese Marconi
has some form in the book that gives him a great chance here at a decent looking price. He seems to be better on good ground and was a very good 2nd in the Irish Cesarewitch at the end of last year of this mark. He also beat Pique Sous on good ground in Wexford last year. He is very consistent and looks to have been improving with each run this year hopefully to a decent go at this race. He ran well in this race last year finishing 8th on softer ground which wouldn’t have suited. 16/1 looks value .

    1 Point EW 16/1 Various

What Willie Mullins horse certainly got in under the radar. Think so much money got punted on the Weld and Martin horses that the market forgot about Mcinley.
