It's the annual "help me off this mountain" day

Now I understand climbing a mountain is a nice personal achievement, but most of these climbers are not fit to climb it. It's a very steep loose shale mountain, not to be taken lightly, some of these assholes do it in their feet. Darwinism at it's finest. Can we not put a big sign at the bottom, "DANGEROUS, CLIMB AT YOUR OWN RISK" and leave them up there, we have better, more needing uses for the rescue helicopter.

I prefer the American " Write your name on your arm so we can identify the body" approach.

In fairness though it probably serve a good purpose to have all the tenderfeet climbing on one day. At least the rescue team can consolidate all the injuries into one day.

Could you imagine the pressure on the emergency services if there were the same amount of injuries spread out randomly over the year...

Culling the herd is more efficient.

People are going for a walk up a mountain. And you're against it why?

You could climb it any day of the year and not a word about it but tv cameras will be there today.

It would be easier to be a Muslim. Instead of Mohammed going to the Mountain, the Mountain can come to Mohammed. Though he still has to fly to Mecca and take a walk in the desert, at least once in his life ...

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Just send everyone in the country up there and tell them to bring down a stone.
That'll soon solve the problem of the mountain.

No you where. Why else would you start this thread. Unless you are against anybody climbing any mountain at any time.

I've no problem with anyone climbing a mountain, I've climbed it myself. I didn't turn up in flip flops and a t-shirt or try climb it in my feet

Culling the herd is more efficient.

Hundreds of people climb it on random days. About 100,000 every year apparently.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/news/environment/safety-warning-issued-to-30-000-planning-croagh-patrick-climb-1.1879598

Last Saturday an Irish Coast Guard Rescue helicopter had to airlift three casualties from the mountain in separate rescues after suffering leg and head injuries.

There were 3 casualties on Reek Sunday 2012 and 12 last year, 3 serious according to the internet. Must be something to do with safety in numbers, keeping most of the herd out of danger.

Just as well the Garth concerts were cancelled , his legions would have missed out on their annual pilgrimage , in fact I think it was a conspiracy by the church to cancel those concerts .

Do they not get hit with some sort of an invoice like you do if you call out the fire brigade?

Because it's really irresponsible to go up there in flip flops. It's not like it's the most challenging climb in the world, but for the last half hour of the ascent, you are skidding around on very loose rocks and a liability to those around you.

I think the bishop of wherever would have a stroke if that happened and joe Duffys liveline would be clogged up for weeks

If I rememeber correctly, it's the idea of climbing a mountain when not physically to do so and in bare feet.

I'm in (reasonably) good shape and I've been up it. Wasn't easy.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

It's really good value if you only do it once every ten or twenty years. And if you're an evil bastard/bitch. Not forgetting the leap of faith you're taking that even if God exists, he gives a ****e whether you climb a mountain or not.

Sure you can get that at confession. OR is this something they're told to do by the priest in confession? Like 10 Hail Marys and go climb a mountain?

You could also get that down at you local BDSM club and at least you'll still be able to walk afterwards. :pac:

I'm sorry, but "more needing uses" gave me a chuckle.

Especially since OP thinks he knows better than the climbers themselves what they should do with their lives.

Doesn't seem fair to the people who live near mountains. It's the postcode lottery again.

I think the OP was trying to make a good point, and it had nothing to do with religion. Around 30,000 people will try and climb Croagh Patrick today and many of them will not have the appropriate equipment or level of fitness required to do it. The trail near the summit has become very worn down over the years and it is pretty steep and covered in loose shale.

The problem is there is an expectation that the emergency services will be there to pick up all the pieces. For anyone climbing any mountain a basic level of preparedness and assessment of the the things that can go wrong is considered to be the responsible thing to do.

Even worse is the number of children dragged along with unsuitable gear and every year there is at least one child treated for exhaustion or borderline hypothermia and many more for blisters, sprained ankles, bruises, fatigue and cuts sustained from falls.

Not saying people shouldn't climb it, but that they should have some basic regard for their own well being and safety and leave the emergency services for actual emergences.

Exactly! I went up there on Paddy's Day and there were kids skidding all over the place. One of them nearly took the legs from underneath me! It gets messy at the top.

Why would you bring a child? Might as well leave them at the top and let them be raised by sheep. The sheep might take better care of them.
