Have to make some silage through a contractor soon. What's more common place , buy the wrap or let the contractor supply it? Would the silage get a extra few wraps if you supplied it ? Nothing worse then a lovely bale turned mouldy over skimpy wrap. Roughly how many bales would you get out of a roll for single wrapped bales or double wrapped silage ?

For single wrapped bales you get approx 30 bales per roll. As for the supplying bit if you supply the wrap at least you know it's the wrap you want and the contractor won't skimp on it if he ain't supplying as it's nothing to him.

Our contractor doesn't supply wrap anymore, unless he's wrapping a small few for a customer. He tells me it ties up too much money.
We are getting around 22 bales per roll of wrap.

im surprised the contractors are not supplying more

they have a potential to save 9.5% on the wrap

i think its the money tied up is the biggest problem, a lot of lads wouldnt pay till year end, 300 bales would be circa 750-800e more tied up, over a good few customers that wouldnt be long adding up to a nice few €

My advice would buy your own quality wrap.
Average price for good quality would be 82 euro per roll.
The wrap contractors supply are usually inferior quality and are not worth a sh1te in the long term.

When on the subject of quality wrap, I am paying €80/roll. A friend of mine has purchased all his wrap this year from a Northern Ireland based supplier for €65/roll.

I was quite astounded by this i.e. A saving of €15/roll.

How is wrap so cheap in NI compared to the ROI?

Perhaps it is of inferior quality? Or has anyone used this cheap wrap from NI before and there no difference at all?

It depends on the brand. Some wrap tears easier then others.
I think their was a great thread on silage wrap a few weeks back

The price was increased in ROI for recycling collection

In my opinion it has nothing to do with the levy its only costing 2 or 2.50 euro its that it has no vat added as they are giving vat numbers. 65 euro plus vat is 80 No difference. I can buy volac at 80 here but then I an registered for vat

Bought wrap made by Zeus plastics last week . 68 euro a roll,
I'm not reg for vat, that's the price including UK VAT. You only pay vat once.
Seems 100%. Great heavy bales, well wilted, not as much as a mark on the wrap after drawing.
That was in McCorry agri near Derrylin.

Never found any real difference. We have black, green and black/green stripes this year.
I dunno why, but I prefer the green!

To be honest transport is as big as issue. If you do 500 bales a day at busy times at 28 bales a roll where do you put the wrap? Thats a lot of time wasted going to collect more plastic. To answer op, usually farmers supply the plastic these days. 28 bales per roll at 18 table rotations which ensures 3 layers of even covearage taking into account varying bale placement on the table and size variation. 30ish at 16 rotations. 22ish at 24 rotations.

Agree on topwrap. Great stuff, strong. Never had an issue with it and even at 18 wraps no moulding reported. Highly reccomended.

Always used volac topwrap no problem until it started tearing on the wrapper ,seems its lighter this year.
