UCD Veg Society

    Hi everybody,

I'm aware that UCD used to have a Veg soc that's now dormant. I'm wondering does anybody know anything about reviving it or would anybody interested in that? Last year as a fresher I was really disappointed about the lack of a vegan/vegetarian/animal rights society and I think it would be great to have one so like minded people can come together and get more active.

    Thanks

I was interested in it too.

There are facebook groups and pages, maybe try to round up interest there as well.

Yeah, that's a good idea. I tried joining the society's facebook page to ask about reviving it but I haven't been accepted, probably because it's dormant. I'll try posting on other UCD facebook groups though. I can't seem to find vegetarian/vegan groups for UCD specifically, do you know of one that would reach a lot of students interested in setting up that type of society?

You'd want to go down the proper channels of setting up a society as we ran into all sorts of trouble even trying to round up interest in a club. Just thread carefully as UCD are damn sensitive to this type of thing.

I thought it wouldn't be too hard with this society since there already was one but I guess that was a while ago. I don't really know anything about the politics or administration of setting up societies, I just really want to get involved in developing an active vegan/vegetarian community on campus. I'm sure there's zero funding for that and lack of support but I'd love to find some way do it..

Best advice I can give you is come up with a decent plan, get some signatures on paper (Even better, some official backing from recognised societies) and approach Richard Butler (He organises and monitors societies) And then see what else you are required to submit. Its not impossible to do but you certainly won't be in the tent in 2014.

You could try advertising around campus and posting ads on the UCD notice board when you log into your account.

It'll take at least 2 years to be recognised, if not more- I recall it took DrawSoc ages. I think you have to get a certain number of people interested, and do a couple of other things. Then your proposal has to go to a societies council approval board, which sits once a year I believe..Once they recognise you as official they give you funds every year.

Hi OP, I know the girl who founded Veg Soc. If you want to PM me, I can pass on your details to her and she might be able to offer more information. I know she was hoping someone would resume it.

Thanks for the advice, I understand know it's a pretty complicated and difficult process! I guess the first step is getting more people interested in joining me or else there's no point making a proposal :/

Hey guys, so a friend and I set up a facebook page to get some interest and support for a vegetarian/vegan/animal rights society before we go about trying to get it officially established. If you want to get involved, send us a message on the fb page or here and please share to anyone you think might be interested! I don't seem to be able to post links here but you'll find it by searching for 'UCD Vegetarian and Animal Rights Society' :) Also, the name's provisional for the moment, so we're open to any suggestions!
