Hey guys, Boss handed out a new worksheet rules thing today.... Basically a list of rules eg. Dont be leaving work early, 2 people cant be missing from the same department on the same day. etc. etc.
This has been printed out on a a normal sheet of paper with the bosses name at the end of it and he wants every staff member to sign it.

Now I have no prob with this atall, the're common rules! But some of the lads are saying "no way im signing it" "Its a legal document and can be held against us" blah blah blah.

Is it legal? What are our options here?

Sign it or dont sign it its only to state that you have read the new rules.

They are the rules of the company if you dont adhere to them pack your bags weather you sign it or not i would imagine.

If you don't sign it the boss will forever remember you as being difficult.

Sign it and continue being a good employee.

Agreed. If all the points are reasonable then I can't see why you wouldn't sign it really.

Lads will be lads. Don't take too much notice.

if they're company policies, then action can be taken against you even if you don't sign. But only if you break the policies.

There is some psychological research that signing an agreement means a person is more likely to commit/fulfill that agreement.
(As opposed to just a verbal promise). So keep an eye on that boss :)

Where it might get interesting is here such rules bump into the legal realities that are workers rights. Admitibly it would be unlikely that such a printed rules of the company would blatantly seek to cross such statutory protections but it could conceivably become an issue if they seek to enforce a "2 people cant be missing from the same department on the same day" rule which might be unavoidable due to leave/maternity requirements.
