09 passat 1.4 tsi or 08 passat 1.9 tdi?

    Hi,
I am not a big car buff but I like my cars without going into massive specifics. I have a Peugeot 308 1.4 petrol which I now need to change as we now have a baby and things do not fit as easily into it. I have priced a few cars and the two seem to be the 08/09 petrol mondeo which seems to drink petrol from what I've read or 08/09 passat.
My question is which engine is the better buy for the passat? I do about 15000km per year and mostly 20km drive to and from work each day. Do I go a year less and get the tdi or is the 1.4 a good reliable engine? I think for my driving the petrol will be fine but when I have gone to dealers they just seem to want diesel-is this something I should factor into for the time when I want to sell on?
Or should I be looking at another car in same range? Thanks

You're probably better off going with the petrol given your usage. It's also a nicer car - the 1.4 is surprisingly good in the Passat.

I thought that - especially with 6 speed for my type of driving.

My mileage is very much like yours and I have the 1.4Tsi Passat. Really nice car, that engine is super smooth and quiet, and really quick when you push on. I'm getting 7.1l/100 which was not far off my previous 2.0 diesel. I'd take it over the diesel all day long.

Can I ask about the timing belt? I have read on a few sites about it being a bit faulty or needing to be changed quite regularly? I know every car will have problems when you read up on internet...

Stretched timing chains you will read about, but I thought that mostly affected the 1.4tsi with the supercharger. Not sure if the standard 1.4t (120bhp) engine is affected or not. George Dalton on here knows a fair bit about these engines. Mine is fine but only 40K and 3 years old.

Recently bought a 08 Highline TSI. It's been perfect so far baring in mind I dont have it long but I've been impressed since I got it. It's been decent on Petrol around town but its been the few long-ish distance trips I've been very impressed with the economy. The 6th gear makes a pile of a difference and its very smooth to drive too. Took me a while to find one but when I did it was worth the wait.

What did you pay for it? Is it worth going up from trendline to comfortline or highline??

Highline is the only spec to buy a Passat in. It's much nicer than trendline and a definite step up from the comfortline.

I paid 9.5k for a 08 highline with 53k miles. As MuppetCheck said the highline is a massive difference from the other two. Read alot about the seats in the comfortline not being the best for the lower back/arse on long trips. The highline you got the heated leather sport seats, which are very comfortable. Got dual climate control, cruise control, electronic handbrake, front and rear electric windows, rain sensored windscreen wipers, etc. The garage I bought from, the comfortline and highline were both going for the same price so for me it was an easy decision to go for the highline.

I think the full leather heated sport seats were an optional extra on the Highline back then. Standard Highline seats were half leather. Comfortline also came with cruise control and dual zone climate control too.

The 10 passat is a comfortline with bluemotion and 105000km on clock.

The 09 passat is about €750 cheaper but has 75000km on clock.

So would people suggest 09 passat because of highline?

Sorry for the delay. I'd go the highline myself but it's down to you I guess. The tsi engine is nice and nippy though. Fuel economy is decent too, on long trips having the 6th gear makes a difference.

Hope you are happy with whatever decision you make or have made.

Yep agree, I bought a Tsi Highline petrol On Tuesday. Early days yet but it's a very comfortable and nice place to be.

Overtaking alot more comfortable too than my 1.5 almera!
