If a person wrote a post on social media or even this website about something in their personal life and the media then published a story about it without the consent of the person, using their personal details and photos, is this allowed?

Eg. If a person gave his/her opinion of something which happened them and despite social media privacy settings the media got the story.

Is there a line of privacy which can be crossed? Eg. If an individual refused permission to run a story re: their social media post yet the media still ran it.

I myself have often wondered this re: social media and when something is shared with friends only then the media should respect a persons privacy.

If you have something you don't want aired in public, don't put it on the internet.

Have you ever read the terms of service for a company like Facebook, Flickr, or Youtube?

You might be surprised what you've given them permission to do with your information...
