Clip in the Indo today

This clip in the Indo today shows a cyclist getting t-boned by a car, where he vaults over the bonnet and lands miraculously on his feet.
    http://www.independent.ie/world-news/europe/unbelievable-moment-cyclist-lands-on-feet-after-headon-collision-with-car-30456457.html
The thing that struck me was the number of vehicles that were parked in the cycle lane or were creeping out menacingly from slip roads into his path.
This video, while disturbing, it is a graphic and compressed example of the type of crap we have to put up with. But also shoots down the arguments from the morons that regularly feature on Boards moaning about cyclists riding out of cycle lanes or in the middle of the road. This was like Indiana Jones commuting.

yep, good cycling position and awareness throughout the clip. Nothing you can do about a right turner suddenly going for it through your path.

I slow down and kinda brace myself when approaching someone waiting to right turn.

Other thing to do is sit up, show the palm of one hand, wave a large red flag with the other shouting nee-naw nee-naw, then shoot off bright sparkly fireworks in the hope that they will see you as approaching traffic.

Clearly it's the cyclist's fault for not wearing hi-vis.

I love the way he had time to shout 'Oh F**k Off' before he went arse over tits. Lucky escape.

Couple of things on the video.

    1. That's going to be an expensive claim. Carbon frame bike broken in half and Ksyrium SLR wheels which will likely need replacing. Ouch. Could be worth more than the car that hit him!!!

    2. I get and understand what people are saying about cars coming out into the cycle lanes and often this is in part unavoidable. Now instances in this video are not but as a driver as well as cyclist some junctions you have no choice you have to creep out sometimes blocking the cycle lane, sometimes blocking half the normal lane as you can't see otherwise. So a lot of the time I'll cut drivers some slack for that one.

Bike'll be grand. Just needs a new fork and pop the wheels back on and he's good to go ;)

He had a cheque from the car drivers insurance within 3 weeks.

Judging by the article in Stickybottle, the driver contested the issue.

The driver clearly causes the accident.

Is the cyclist not going a too fast for the conditions though? There are numerous hazards and obstacles - cars parked / cars pulling out onto the cycling lane, wet roads.

35kph doesn't seem excessive. I'm not sure going slower would be safer, at that speed there's less risk of dicey overtakes.

That is unreal, lucky guy. What was the car thinking?

The vehicles that are parked are actually in loading bays and not in the cycle lane.

As alot of cycle lanes do the one in the clip just ends abruptly at the start of the loading bays.

He seems to be going slower than 35kmph.

He is traveling as fast or slower than a car would be along that stretch. I don't see his speed as a factor at all.

I want to see the rest of that video, wonder what the driver said and the cyclist too!

In the comments on the video he posted that he was doing 22mph.

They did, until the insurance company saw the video.

Headcam saves your ass, well the claim end anyway. Lucky escape, had one of those and went bouncing over the car
