Vodafone Fibre Wireless Issue

I got Vodafone Fibre installed on Monday, when connected via ethernet cable to laptop no issue with speed test 10ms ping, 80mbs down, 18mbs up.

The issue is with wireless, tested laptop within 3 feet of router, 10ms, 18mbs down, 17/18mbs up, even worse results on iPhone 5, 12/13mbs down

When I rang Tech Support he basically told me that there was nothing wrong with service and that a wireless device was draining the system. Wireless devices in house are Laptop, iPhone 5, wireless adaptopr on xbox 360 (turned off), wireless adaptor on Sky HD box.

I was in sister-in laws house at weekend with same vodafone package and more wireless devices connected and got 45mbs average down on speedtest.

A little bemused with this I am basically achieving the same download speeds with my iPhone from previous 20MB package as I am achieving with Fibre.

Wireless devices share the medium so the more you have the slower it'll go, that said 20 is still a bit low.

Likely you have a high level of interference, you need to troubleshoot for sources of it. Google is your friend.

How many other WiFi boxes are in your range. If their channels overlap this can interfere with your Vodafone box. You can get apps that list all of the Wifi devices in range and what channels they are using. You can use one of those to see if your channels are overlapping. That'll help a bit. You'll need to log onto your Vodafone router and choose a channel that is freeish.

Other stuff that can interfere are microwave ovens, baby monitors (yours or your neighbours).

I found the wireless adpater on the SKY box to be pretty poor speed-wise. You might try powering it off and see if your speeds improve on other devices. Your wireless connection will be dragged down to the speed of the slowest device. Even on a wireless-n connection I get about 60Mb/s max, but speed drops as soon as other wireless-g devices get added. That said, 20Mb/s is more than adequate for tablet/phone usage on wi-fi unless you're trying to download huge files.

After doing some tests on your recommendations, it looks like sky wireless adaptor is causing the biggest problem, disconnected it and download speed nearly doubled.

Might get home network plugs, would this help!

If you mean homeplugs(AKA powerline adapters) then yes, would sort it entirely.

Op has a rebranded eircom f1000 router i bet

i discovered a way to use the eircom p660 & d1000 (d1000 has pretty decent wifi compared to f1000) on the same subnet as the f1000 and it is so easy i cant believe i missed it lol

to do this with a P660

    reset the p660

log into it and go to network> lan, change the router's ip to 192.168.1.200

apply it then after it reboots log in again and go to network> lan and disable dhcp and click apply

next go to and go to network> wireless and match the ssid and wpa2-psk key to that of the f1000

click apply then connect an ethernet cable from lan port 1 on p660 to lan port 1 on f1000 and you are done.

to do this with a d1000

    reset the d1000

log into it and go to network settings > home network, change the router's ip to 192.168.1.200

apply it then after it reboots log in again and go to network settings > home network and disable dhcp and click apply

next go to and go to network settings > wireless and match the ssid and wpa2-psk key to that of the f1000

click apply then connect an ethernet cable from lan port 1 on d1000 to lan port 1 on f1000 and you are done.

no need to bridge the f1000

The HG658c has 802.11b/g/n and uses 2X2 MINO antenna - coverage and performace should not be a problem and that is why the device is slighlty later (to provide better wifi range using multiple antenna etc)

You may find if the Sky adaptor is using 802.11n and doing a download on HD etc, it is simply using a lot of the available radio "space" - equally you may simply be in an area where there is a lot of wifi and the channels are in use (2.4 and 5.xGhz are unlicensed bands used by all wifi routers)

you may also have some devices using 802.11n and some using 802.11b or g - changing modulation and standards also impacts performance.

Wifi is not perfect......You could also try using one of the non overlapping channels (your device will be set to "auto" by default) 1, 6 OR 11 - but the risk here is that if loads of others do the same or other devices lock on to these channels then they themselves also become congested.

    Hope that helps.

    C

PS - VF does not use the Zyxel F1000 device supplied by eircom.

Got the Huawei router in January when my old one broke, at that stage I was on 24MB download speed, When I got Fibre I asked the question did I need a new router but was informed by Vodafone the the one I had would do.

Download speed gone to ****e over last few days, averaging between 12/16mbs while upload speeds are 17/18mbs, disconnected every wireless devices, increases up to 17/19mbs.

When contacted Vodafone technical support and was told there is nothing wrong with service it was interference from surrounding WIFI broadband in neighbourhood. When I check for available networks in my area I find one other in range, my next door neighbour doesn't even have broadband. If that is the case does this not happen in every urban area where Fibre is established.

    Getting slightly miffed!!
