Getting a Garmin New or Secondhand ?.

    All,

Im in the market for a garmin for the bike, currently looking at the 500. 510 is too dear.

The options Im looking at are to buy new (Bike24 €162 plus delivery or wiggle at €175 incl delivery).

Or to buy second hand here or ebay. Thing is that they are not cheap, generally €130ish for unit or £100ish on uk ebay.

Is that a false economy with the risk of poor condition, no warranty or knackered battery.
What generally do people get out of battery and what stage does it get so bad to need replacing and how much does that cost and who does it.

The way I would look at it would be, if the second hand one is 130 and a new one is 162, I would much rather pay the 32 extra for piece of mind. If there was a considerable difference in the second hand price, then I might think about it.

agreed, I'd buy a new one. They're great devices, I've had my edge 800 nearly 2 years and use it all the time. battery on 800 lasts about 6-7 hours before it needs recharging.
Never had a problem with mine, but would prefer to have some come back in terms of warranty if there was a problem.

You often see reconditioned units on Handtec and other sites which are a good bit cheaper than new. Look for NOH on the product description, e.g. Edge 800 NOH for £161 versus £212 new.

Outside of warranty, the issue I'd have with 2nd hand is the battery life may be much less than a newer unit, and wouldn't really consider one unless it was very cheap, or a very recent purchase.

Got a bryton rider 50 of bike24 for 160 including heart rate strap and cadence. Very happy with it

Do you upload to strava ?
Have seen some say that strava messes up the Bryton uploaded files.

Lastly like the look of the 50 but why is it cheaper than the 40 when it has maps etc on it ?

Also the bike24 says "Note: The delivered device only comes with the maps for Germany, Austria and Switzerland."
Are you stuck with them or have you to buy extra maps.
