Flying ants

It's that time of year again when the little buggers gain a pair of wings and get all excited in their bizarre annual mating ritual.

If you have any ants inside your house probably be best getting rid of them now before this starts and close your windows  It's been warm and muggy this summer so probably will be lots of these things in swarms, much more than usual. On the plus side some funny moments can be witnessed if someone happens upon a swarm at just the right time in the evening:pac:

Alternatively you could spray ant repellant on yerself and see how it goes. *not advised!*

Went for a walk tonight and was shocked at how many were around.... Hundreds for about a mile of my walk. Thousands of little ones underfoot. Have honestly never witnessed anything like it before. Within an hour they were gone.... Back to their nests I presume. Thankfully none around my house.

Is there a German woman in the library eating cake?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

We witnessed streams of them today erupting from gaps in the paving like little insect volcanoes.
Husband filmed them and when you watch in close-up, its amazing; the male ants tug them along by their noses. Sometimes the females sniff all around each other. Some of them were so unbalanced by the unfamiliar wings that they couldn't get off the ground and kept keeling over!

And an hour later - gone!

I've heard in the past that swarms of flying ants were a sign of rain.

Not too sure if that one would stand up to a rigorous scientific analysis though.

The tons of little ones (without wings) are there to make sure that everything goes well for their fliers.

Those big ones... those are would-be queens.

Know what the little ones hate more than ANYTHING else? Those would-be queens (from other nests). Will literally tear them asunder.

The more you know/ Damn nature you scary

Quite a number of UK newspaper articles saying record numbers over there

    http://www.scunthorpetelegraph.co.uk/Flying-ants-invasion-causing-misery/story-21737487-detail/story.html
The flying ants are sexually active males and females who hang around for warm, muggy, and almost pre-thunderous weather and then swarm.

Is that what they are? 5.30 today, walked out of the office, and there were kajillions of weird flying things that all seemed drunk and were all divebombing me. I found it funny seeing them getting caught in the webs until one got caught in a particular web and a luminous red spider the size of two sabre tooth tigers came out and scared everybody away.

I know the people of Scunthorpe to be weird (comes from having their internet censored all those years) but who keeps records of the number of flying ants?

Loads of these flying ants on my back patio last week. They seem to have gone - for now.

A friend had an infestation of the little buggers in his living room.

I had a swarm of them in my garden after it rained on Friday. They were getting a bit too close to my front door so I had to kill them all. If you mix salt and boiling water and spray it on them, they'll be dead within an hour.

Its funny that this particular thread has gone all multi-lingual because when discussing the Swarm in Bray this evening with family, I likened the situation to "Die Gluckliche Zeit" as far as the spiders, birds and bats were concerned.

For the uninformed, "Die Gluckliche Zeit" which means "The Happy Time" was a term used by German U-Boat captains to describe the period of time during WW2 when they were unopposed in the Atlantic and were sinking merchant shipping left right and centre. Modern Military planners would call it "A Target Rich Environment"

One thing I dread about every summer is the inevitable explosion of the insect population. Flying ants, mosquitoes, moths, daddy long legs (no. 1 on the list of insects I dislike), blue bottles etc. Good god I hate the fúckers, can't leave food unattended for too long either or those really small flies will swarm all over it.

    Ugh, insects...

Came home from work last week to find what could only be described as a new eco-system in my bathroom. Hundreds of ants everywhere, some flying and others on foot. Emptied my bathroom of all "things", boiled a kettle of water and went to work. Next day my bathroom resembled the killing fields of Cambodia

I would have a nervous breakdown. Would probably have to leave the house for a few days too.
