Approaching companies about an internship

    Hi,

I'll soon have earned a postgrad in an area in which I have no experience. I have a very flexible full-time job, so would be able to fit in an unpaid internship if someone would have me. Most of the entry level positions that interest me are feckin' Jobbridge but like I said, I have a job and really don't want to quit it to go on the dole just to be in with a shot of getting a Jobbridge position. Not to mention I live in Dublin (and will need to stay here) so €238 per week simply won't cut it.

Has anyone here ever contacted companies asking if they could intern? And if so were you successful, and what did you do to convince them to take you on?

    Many thanks!

Accounting, accounts type stuff. But I just wanted to hear of other people's experiences, whatever the area.

I work in accounting so have a bit of an idea of how it works.
The big four take interns during the summer months but you have to apply online early in the year for those.
The top twenty firms then, numbers 5-20, also take interns but not to the same scale. Try phoning around and asking to speak to the person in charge of recruitment and see would they have anything available. Just do a little research and be positive and you might just get lucky.

Big 4s are out for me, I don't really have the grades and have got plenty of rejections from them! They tend to be quite rigorous in who they select for internships, and have a process in place for choosing them. Plus, I'm too old for big 4 internships. Sad but true. Actually, it's been pretty much stony silence or swift rejection from any big 20 and big 4 firms I've applied to. I'm not sure if I'd cut out for the accountancy exams or if I even want to pursue them. I'd honestly just love to work as an accounts assistant or something along those lines or even explore other business areas. I took a sharp change from science and am still considering what to do next. Hence why I am interested in internships.
