cant wait to see one of these on the road, only €170 to tax for the year, I expect houses to be sold so people can avail of da "cheap tax" sure the 520d is astronomical at €270...

    http://www.independent.ie/life/motoring/car-reviews/video-behind-doors-of-bmw-supercar-a-glimpse-of-tomorrows-world-30415576.html

I work beside a bmw car sales in Dublin, a new M6 has been imported, believe the cost is similar to the I8, I know its far more of a petrolheads car, but give me the I8 any day, its the first car mass produced by a mainstream manufacturer, that looks like a car people in the 60's or 70's thought they would be driving in the 90's or 00's :)

Price includes SEAI grant of €5,000 and VRT relief of €2,500.

They're paying people to buy BMWs now Joe!

Fair warning, I would kill any of you for an i8. You know where to find me, BMW.

I think they ruined it by fitting chavvy opening doors.

I read it somewhere before, but from the rear it really does look like its pooing out a 911:

Also looks like a cassette on the number plate holder...

This is actually the best looking car I've seen in years.

how much of a smug b**tard would you feel driving around in that on irish roads with all the begrudger's here? absolutely priceless, I might even have it over an aventador in head turning steaks...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,157 ✭✭✭✭Alanstrainor

I'd have one in a heartbeat. They'll never been bangernomics with cheap tax like that!

For me it would be a choice between an M4, or an i8 if I had the cash...the i8 would win I would reckon. But presuming I had the cash, I would also have the cash to be an e92 M3 to make sure I'm polluting too!

Watching an ad for the i8 this morning I was struck by how beautiful the engine sounded, like a lovely V8. Then I remembered it doesn't have one.....so does it emit a v8 grumble in the real world?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

I can't wait to see one on the road. The ludicrous thing is that the tax will actually keep the second hand value of these quite high. Even if you could afford an M6, there's a lot of justification in paying €170 instead of €2350. Very different cars obviously, but I'd be having the I8 all day long.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,127 ✭✭✭✭Idbatterim

I wonder what deprecation will be like on them... as has been mentioned you are getting a hyper car looks with a 7.5k government subsidy* and VRT which would normally be 36% on these cars is the lowest current rate of 14%, normally for cars with these looks it would be 36%, plus the highest current rate of motor tax which is €2,350 per annum!

Was the ad on Irish tv ba_barabus?

*Cost: from €136,430 on-the-road. Price includes SEAI grant of €5,000 and VRT relief of €2,500.

Anyone fancy a time-share on one of these lads? Get 10 of us together, we can go down to bmw and lay down €13,600 each :)

I saw that advert too. It sounded fantastic...until you think what is under the bonnet.

Either way it's a cracking looking motor.

    Tempting!

Just had a look at the bmw.de i8 configurator, will we ever agree on color?

I believe the noise is part engine, part fake - from a better review on a UK Techie site - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/07/15/review_bmw_i8_plug_in_hybrid_supercar/

In this mode, the petrol engine ... is permanently on. It’s audible even at idle and even more so under hard acceleration when the artificially amplified noise resembles a naturally aspirated V6 rather than a turbocharged 3. Personally, I’m not a fan of amplified engine noises. I’d rather the i8 sounded like a Tie Fighter at full chat than an M3, but that’s just me.

PS If I had the money - maybe or maybe I'd buy an 850 CSi and spend the change on petrol :D:D:D

ive seen a few of them knocking about. They look even better in real life than in a photo.
    Pure bat-mobile type of thing.
With all the mad air ducts/ fins or whatever around the rear it'd be a bitch to wash though.

If you can afford that, you can afford to get someone to wash it for you, two bucket hand wash only, no car washes!

Saw one in the flesh in January and had to be peeled away from it. At the time it was being loaded onto the back of a truck to take it away from CES. They wouldn't accept my offer of dropping it off for free for them

jeez you're mans voice in that video is not very suitable for a super car review. Sounds more like he's talking about old age ailment remedies or something. I almost fell asleep watching it.

Here is the proper way of acquiring one :pac:

Couple of prototype pictures from last year.

Two days ago, I saw a demo i8 (in white) at a BMW dealer in Guildford. The car is the dealer's first demo i8 and arrived this week (dealer has had demo i3 cars for some time). I asked a sales guy if the car would be sold as an ex-demo car in, say, 6 months time. His response was that BMW UK owns the car and might take it back. I expect that BMW Ireland will take the same line with any demo i8 cars "given" to any BMW dealers in Ireland.

Seems that all of BMW's production allocations of the i3 and i8 have sold out. Therefore, if you order either model now, you could be waiting up to 12 months to take delivery.

Delivery lead-times like that should keep the residual values of any i3 and i8 cars already sold high - it will be like the early days of the first generation BMW Mini and the X5 over a dozen years ago where demand exceeded supply for a long time and people who ordered in advance of those model launches made premiums when they sold them on after 6 or even 12 months. Interestingly, in the UK at least, other BMW models such as the current X3 and X5 have long delivery times (order now for delivery in Q1 or Q2 next year, apparently).

BMW has indicated that the i8 will be made in much smaller quantities than the i3, so that might help to keep residual values of the i8 high over the long term.

That said, there's no rhyme or reason with residual values of used limited production run cars. The BMW Z8, E30 M3, E46 M3 CSL, M1, and 1M all enjoy strong residuals but in the case of some of those cars the high values emerged over a long time. At the more exotic end, a used Bugatti Veyron would be losing value compared to, say, a used Ferrari Enzo, which would be appreciating.

Yeah - saw one a few times about a week ago - looked nice, but the sound was a bit weird - a bit like a V6 mated to a hair drier.
