Excessive download issues - Satellite

    Hi all.

I have a problem with my satellite broadband. I'm on the NBS scheme and have had the system for about a year. In the last few weeks my data usage has doubled for no apparent reason and I was hoping that someone might be able to help. I was using about 60% of the 11gb limit, but now it's running at 97% and even though I'm hardly using it, it seems to be using twice what it used to do.

The dish goes through a wireless router. We have no neighbours who might be using it. The usage is only at the times when I am on it. I have tried other people's laptops on it, so it's not a virus/background programme. There are branches in the way of the dish, but I have cut most of them down.

Could the wireless router be faulty and sending information twice?
Could the Onwave box be faulty and sending the information twice?
    Could there be another problem?

3 of course were of no help.

I know you say there are no background processes running, but 90% of the time it is utorrent causing the issue.

Have you ever downloaded any type of torrent on any of the devices?

Sending the information twice by either the router or onwave box is very unlikely, I can't see anything that would make this happen.

Do you have a sky box plugged into the router that is downloading series in the background for the on demand service by any chance?

    Ken

    Hi Ken. Thanks for replying

I don't have Sky or anything else using the broadband. Even my phone has the wireless turned off.

I have downloaded torrents before, but have removed these from my laptop. When my laptop is connected, but I'm not using it, the usage is next to nothing, which is why I ruled out a background process. But if I do some basic browsing the usage is double from a few weeks ago. I'm only visiting the same sites I did before

I've used my girlfriend's chromebook and the problem is the same (can't use torrents on that). I've also tried a neighbours laptop and the problem is the same

Where are you getting the usage stats from?

I get them from the traffic usage website

    nbssatellitetraffic.com

I had a similar problem on my wireless connection. It turned out I had malware on my laptop, try downloading Malwarebytes. It worked for me.

BTW I am about to get a satellite connection as I am also in NBS area and the wireless connection is crap at the best of times. Is your system any good, and are you also with Three?

    Thanks

Wasn't malware. It was a problem with the data that the satellite was recording. Got Three to reset it and it is all back to normal now.

I had the Three dongle as their website said I was in the NBS area, but it didn't work, so after much shouting at them and eventually contacting the government department responsible, they fitted a satellite dish free of charge. It's been great and costs the same as the dongle, but the download allowance is only 11gb.

However as the NBS scheme is ending now, i don't think that they will be putting anyone else onto the satellite scheme. For those like me that have one, the price is going to double for the same service when the NBS stops.

Well I am already down for the Satellite connection and my NBS contract doesn't end until later this month. They haven't said the installation will cost me and they said the monthly charge will be the same, so it seems I have just got it in time!

It won't cost you anything to have it installed, but when the NBS ends, you will have to pay full price for using it with whichever provider you go with. The cheapest I have seen for 10gb monthly allowance is €39.95, so the monthly cost will double!

Thanks for that I will keep a close watch out for any increase. Fortunately they have put me on a 30 day contract so I can cancel as soon as I like, and if they put it up to that I will.
