Hi my pedigree limousin was showing signs of coming in to heat yesterday evening as a few young bulls followed her around the field trying to mount her but she wouldn't let them. I put her in last night as neighbours charolais has broken in before so got Ai this morning for her but after I let her out the 6 month old bull calves are still following her at dinner time will I Ai her again as she might of bring only coming in ?

Bull sperm survives for 24-48 hours post-insemination (although I think this could be shorter with frozen/thawed semen). We normally go for 12-18 hours after onset of standing heat. Personally I think yours could have been a little early by our standards.

But we also had a cow do the same as yours earlier this year, bulls stopped following her so we inseminated her. Let her back out & bulls started after her again, so we did her again.

First used a BB straw, then a CH one, she's in calf to one of them now anyway!

Ya I seen the bull calves follow her at 6 pm yesterday so I left her til 1pm today so that's a 19 hour space so I'll know more if she lets them mount her later this evening I'll do her morning as I'm using €50 straws so want to be sure. Ai man said she was open so time will tell.

Best time is 8-12 hours after shes is in standing heat. Young bulls could be following her around the field 2-3 days before shes fully in standing heat

Ya I think your right I'll keep a eye on her and see what happens don't want to be wasting expensive straws she's my best and only cow left to go in calf.

I find towards the end of standing heat or just after it is a good time to Ai. Sounds like you didn't see her standing to be mounted so it's hard to say in this case. Can you say what bull you used?

Might be no harm throwing another straw into her so and suffer the cost of it

Fair enough, you did the right thing. I think I'd chance it and leave her be now. You'll know in three weeks.

Make sure the cow is in standing heat before AI, that she is definately standing to be mounted or else you have wasted the AI straws.
Sometimes the strong bull weanlings can be up to three days following a cow before she is truly in standing heat.

So she's either seven months incalf or not incalf at all? Any reasons as to why you think she's not incalf? She wouldn't be showing much belly at seven months if that's all you're going on. Could you get her dipped/scanned?

Agree with Kovu on scanning, we'd a 2nd calver was scanned incalf in November but at 8 months I was doubting (wondering if she picked), next thing she started to spring & calved a CQA heifer at 286 days (2 week ago)
