NCT [brakes broken]

    Hi folks,

Trying to do this on my phone so prob not the correct place to post this.

My partners jeep was in for an NCT yesterday evening. During the hand break test the guy pulled up the hand break and wouldn't release properly leaving the back breaks rubbing. She was advised not to drive it for the weekend. When she spoke to her mechanic he told her that it was more than likely the break shoes needed replacing. So she's no transport for the weekend & had to go to Dublin for a training course. Is there any comeback on repairs due to this?? Are NCT responsible for costs??

    No they're not.

The brakes failed while doing what they were designed to do.

Would it not have been the case that the guy excessively pulled the hand break causing this.??

No. They're designed to work through the full travel of the lever.

Yep, car failed naturally. It's not NCTs fault.
Get brakes fixed and keep driving.

just out of curiosity what jeep was it? some 4x4s have their handbrake working off the propshaft and as such handbrake testing shouldnt be tried on the rolling road...

There's no such thing as excessively pulling the handbrake.

My money is on it not even being a "Jeep" :D

Happened to me before. My mechanic was of the opinion that the tester was over vigourous with the handbrake. No idea what he meant by that, or how it could have happened, but aside from some smoke on the way home from the test center (which was alarming to say the least!) I had no further issues.

Would have happened you in the next few days anyway. It's not his fault, if anything i reckon he was trying his best to get you through the handbrake test.

Not necessarily. Most people will not stress their handbrake to its full limits under normal day to day driving conditions, so even if an issue does exist when the handbrake is worked to its limit its entirely possible they might never see it.
