    Hi guys,
    I have a 2006 1.4 d4d corolla with 1ndtv engine.
Lately I seem to be losing anywhere from 100-200km range per tank.
I always fill up at the same place and their diesel is fine.
I have tried other places but it made no difference.
There is also a stronger smell off the exhaust when the car is idling.
    No black smoke/colored smoke.
Car is due a service in 1000km but I cant see that being the cause for such a major decrease in economy.
Any ideas what I can look at?
    Thanks Guys,
    Thomas Cawley

Forgot to say, check enging light was on a number of weeks ago on the way to work but was off for th drive home then.

Get it serviced and a diagnostic check done make sure and do the air filter weather its due or not and take it from there.

Going to be doing a service on it this weekend if dad picks up the parts for me.
I always do the air filter at every service.
Had a diagnostic done 3k km ago with no faults found

You need to get it checked out by a decent mechanic.
It could be anything from sticky brake calipers to injectors needing to be replaced.
What kind of diagnostic computer was used?, seems very strange it didn't read any stored faults.
Not all diagnostic machines are equal when it comes to asian motors.

    Brakes are grand,
Would assume injectors are grand as I use diptane every now and again
Was some sort of handheld diagnostic computer.
Yes i'd assume it was a fairly cheap diagnostic machine used.
Would a diagnostic even be worth while if there's no MIL on though?

No faults found is not always the full picture though. For instance if there was dodgy maf sensor, it may not throw up a fault code. But if you were to read the live data, it may well tell you that it was knackered.
Make sure the person using scanner knows what they are doing.

Hes been servicing my familys cars for years and comes highly recommended by plenty of my people in my area. Hes only an indy mechanic but that shouldnt make a difference.
Couldnt tell ya if he checked live readings as I did not get him to do the diagnostic and my dad wouldnt have a clue what was done.
Is it possible that there is lots of carbon built up than a good 30 minute hard drive over 4k revs would fix?

30 mins revving it won't fix anything and using Dipentane is no guarantee of good injectors.
    We are just guessing here.
If everything is fine and the machine used by the mechanic is showing no faults then its really time to get another mechanics opinion.
Modern diesels need more than 30 mins of being caned weekly to stay in good order.

In terms of driving I do a fair bit during the weekends. I drive 20km a day mon-thursday, 120km friday, 100km saturday and 200km on sundays.
I do understand what you're saying about getting a second opinion.
I guess I'll wait and see how the service goes with genuine toyota parts :)
