Line Issue Query

    I am with Vodafone.

A couple of months ago I complained of frequent BB disconnects when I was on 10 Mbps. I was told my line quality was too low for 10 Mbps so they dropped it to 7. I still experienced frequent disconnects so logged a line fault.

An Eircom technician called. He said their side of the line was fine so we investigated mine. The Eircom cable from their pole was too short to reach the main socket, so there was a join in the loft to a secondary cable running the last 6M down through the wall to the socket. He measured a noise margin of about 7.2 Db at the socket.

We went into the loft and the tech measured a S/N of 11db at the end of the main cable. He also checked back at the pole and said it was 12-13 db there. He suggested I could replace the extension cable with CAT-5 to try and improve things. He also replaced the wall socket with a newer one containing a dedicated router port and a separate phone socket.

So I got some CAT-5 and replaced the old cable but there was not the slightest change in the noise margin reported by my BT Voyager router.

In talking to the tech, he said I might see an improvement in the S/N ratio when e-Fiber became available because the cabinet was 1-2 K closer to me than the exchange.

about 3 weeks ago I contacted Vodafone to inquire about getting fiber and was told that although the Eircom website said it was available in my area, (Ballina, Co Tipp.) their system said that it wasn't and that it should be from the 7th July.

A few days ago I contacted Vodafone again and was told e-fber was still not available to me and was given the Ireland offline website to check the location of cabinets. That site listed the closest cabinet to me as not being commissioned yet. I contacted Eircom as I have been thinking of switching to them and was told that the 7 Mbps I currently get was the best they could offer. I asked about that improving when the e-fiber cabinet was commissioned. They said it already was and that their system showed that I was already connected to it.

Thinking the CAT-5 extension and the join were the problem, I relocated the Eircom wall socket to where an unused TV wall plate that was closer to where the Eircom cable enters the house. So now the Eircom cable connected directly to the socket, eliminating the join and the CAT-5 extension.

The noise margin dropped from 7.9 db measured just before the move, to 6.2 db after. I don't get it. I had thought that with 11 db measured by the Eircom tech at the end of the cable that I should have seen a significant improvement.

    Any ideas?
