    Hi

Passed my driving test yesterday and said i would sell my car once i did. Heres a link to the ad.
    Here
A few of my mates said i was dreaming at that price because of the age of the car and the fact its a renault clio, but ive never sold a car before and not sure what to do. All the info on the car is there and it has pretty low mileage. I tried to guage it on the other prices but at this end they go from 300-1000 euro which is alot imo.

Any advice is welcome thanks a lot

There's one small error in the ad.
The engine size is 1.2 litre (1242 cc)
    not 1.1. I reckon about 500 euro.

Ill change it now. Even with the belt and everything only done?

Seems in decent shape. I'd recommend putting up some interior pics though (I always move to the next car if there's not a full set of clear pictures), and maybe list a bit about what spec it has (electric windows etc)

I think the price is fair enough considering it's been recently serviced, low mileage and still has 3 months tax on it. Depends what you want for it though OP. I'd probably leave the price as it is and take €750 myself

Also, be aware that at that price point you'll be inundated with timewasters and chancers and people looking to "swap" you their heap as well. Get a PAYG phone for handling the calls that you can throw the SIM away when it's done. Also remember that all sales are final and you're not giving a warranty so if some guy/girl comes back to you a week (or even an hour!) afterwards saying something is wrong then that's tough really - they are the ones obliged to check the car out to their satisfaction before they hand over any money.

As long as you're straight up about the history and any problems then you will have done your part. Also, make sure that you are the one to send off the VLC form, not the buyer.

Its actually 1149cc, so the OP wouldn't be incorrect advertising it as 1.1
However Renault marketed it as a 1.2 so I'd be putting it down as that.

Re the price. Its a tiny bit high, not mental high. A new test would help it sell.

Put the car in early for the NCT and you should get a good price. You can NCT a car 3 months before its due date.

Looks like a nice car, if it doesn't sell soon lower the price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭LawlessBoy

Thanks for all the advice. Ill add in some more pictures later on today

One more point... as well as the extra bits I mentioned above, I'd probably change "immaculate" to "excellent" or "Very good" - scratches and wear and tear on a 16 year old car would not make it immaculate. Oh and if you have the missing hub cap, put it back on or maybe get one from a scrap yard.

Aside from that though I think you have a good one. :)

    In your opinion

While it may not be the usual BMW or something so loved on this forum, it's a decent little run around or starter car for someone and the OP has priced it accordingly.

As most people in this country only care about getting from A-B then there's nothing wrong with it especially as the OP seems to have looked after it.

Pictures of cars just washed and still dripping wet always puts me off. Makes me think that the seller is trying to hide bad paint work or peeled lacquer etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,846 ✭✭✭Moneymaker

Get a new NCT and it should fetch 600-700 quid or so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,894 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

Price is ok in that it leaves room to haggle. No one asks 900.00 and wants 900.00
I'm sure OP would take 785 for example !

Only reason for that is that it was getting late and the car was filthy :pac::pac: Can change them if needs be

okay personally i think the price is a bit on the high side seeing as there is only a few months nct and you state the tyres are at 50% which will mean a few quid on tyres down the line. also its hard to believe such low mileage on a 16 year old car whick would have me thinking of it being clocked or off the road for a long period of time, not saying it was but thats how id be thinking. Best of luck with the sale any ideas on what your next car might be.

Car was in dry storage for 2 years before i bought it last year should it be mentioned? im only the second owned on it too. One owner for 15 years

I wouldn't mention it sitting up. I would mention that you are the second owner however. Try and book an nct I reckon and put it through.

OP, I think this might get 700 at most. If you want to get more out of your sale start by having hub caps on all the wheels. Not having this makes the car look unloved.

The milage seems very low. If you have anything to back it up take a picture and add it to the ad.

The car can go for an NCT in about two weeks so book it in. This will help.

Most of them just want to think they're tycoons by bargaining you down to 1/3 of your asking price, but they never had any intention of buying the car in the first place.

I'd a 00 Opel Astra I was using as a runabout for a while, it had 9 months test and 3 months tax, no scrapes or dings and I'd d*ckheads offering me €350.

I was asking €950 but I ended up selling it to my old fella for five hundred, and I diverted all calls on the sim card to one of those sex chat lines, that's how fed up I got.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,127 ✭✭✭✭Gael23

You would be pushing it to get more than €500 for that.
put it on for €650 and take anything more than €500

    Best advice summary:

Get better pics up (dry car)- full selection 6 outer / 3 inner (with one of those showing clocks with engine running)
    Replace wheel trim
    Adjust wording of ad
    Reduce price to €750
Put it in early for NCT if you can (this would sell it quickly IMO)
    Get burner phone !

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,163 ✭✭✭robertxxx

I sold a micra 2 years ago that was a 1999 and similar mileage for 600 euro phone rang off the hook, others on the net were upto 900.

    Specify tax/nct status
    Specify service history
    Remove immaculate references

    So I'd say

"Renault for sale (Insert model for Renault), good condition, low mileage due to x amount of owners.

Well maintained, last service (insert date) (Insert items covered)
Full service history available (if possible)

    Car has following features:

I'd stick to the €900 tbh and take €850 minimum, but then I have zero patience with gowls making offers and buy and sell an awful lot of cars and vans. The price is the price, buy it or feck off, and that's cash, thanks, no, I don't fancy a chat and no, I won't take €500 quid. You need to be hard when selling and have a thick skin with timewasters. If you are soft and easily swayed, you'll get swayed. The price of anything is set by the person selling. Other people can choose to buy or not buy. There's always a buyer, you just need to be firm and wait for them to arrive. Idiots abound.

I'll give you half a Curly Wurly and a packet of Love Hearts and that's me final offer.

    900, even 850 for a 98 Renault Clio.

Just because the car is old doesn't mean it is worthless.
People who offer 200 euro for a car just because it is old are chancers, for some reason they don't mind driving a 200 euro car, or selling it on for profit.

Almost any car that is driving and has NCT is worth 400-500 euro. If the NCT is freshly done, then 600-700 is a fair price. Car in good condition, like the one posted by OP can be sold easily. I would put it through nct first.

These Clios are reliable enough to be kept on a road, perfect learmers car on a budget.

Agreed, it is easily a 600-800 euro car with a new NCT. Always a demand for small, cheap cars.

Yeah, mad! Sure you'd get a good telly for that!

Then again, there's not that much in a telly...

In fact, Irish car prices are mad. Mad cheap. Per essemple, I bought an E39 520 today for €500 snots with a bit of NCT and everything done for the next NCT, and yes, I know cars so it will pass no bother. The new center driveshaft, bought and fitted last month by BMW, cost far more than that. Which is nuts. The four new tyres didn't leave much change from that 500 either.. but the seller was glad to get 500. Go figure.

If it was mine, I would have let me go to be fecked and broken the car tbh, but there you go. €850 for a full, functioning car is peanuts. There is a lack of perspective, but there you go.

    Hello Lawless person,

If €500-800 means so much then try to sell it.

If I'd just passed my test I'd keep driving this low mileage model for as long as it wasn't costing a fortune.

KEEP IT. What do you intend doing with the small money you're hoping to get?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭LawlessBoy

Looking to put it towards some money i have there for a nicer car, meeting up with someone later on.

Anyone have any tips when it actually comes to doing the deal? I know i should hold onto the log book ect...

Just anything else to watch out for?
