Advice on buying a Jazz bass?

    Any advice/tips/recommendations greatly appreciated :)

I play a Fender Precision Bass and I'm looking at getting a Jazz bass as a second bass.

My technical knowledge of instruments is not great so I'm unsure what I should be looking for in a new bass.

I play in a rock band and I would say my style of playing is somewhere between Krist Novoselic and Kim Deal :pac: I'll be using the bass to play live and recorded on just a couple of tracks so while it doesn't have to be top of the range it needs to be decent enough. Fenders are my preference but I'm open to being educated on others! :) (A Gibson Thunderbird would be pretty cool but it's out of my budget!)

Absolute max budget is €700 but lower is good too. I'm happy to buy online or in a bricks and mortar. Any help greatly, greatly appreciated. :)

Squier basses get a lot of good reviews on boards. I believe Rigsby mentioned them again recently.

I think it may have been "Dord" as I'm not very familiar with Squier basses. According to him, they have indeed improved in recent times.

OP, choosing a bass is an entirely personal thing. A great bass to one person might be mediocre to someone else. My advice is where possible to try out as many basses as you can. Only then, will you find "your" bass.

Having said the above, while I may not know much about "Squiers" I do possess four G&L's (the "L" stands for a certain someone called "Leo" ;)). So you could say that I am familiar with them. In your search for the "right" bass, I would recommend that you check out the Tribute G&L JB2.

Only problem is that it may not be easy to try one out as they are not common in Ireland. The only place in Dublin that may stock them is "X Music".

I bought a Fender Jazz Modern Player for €529 last year on sale in Xmusic. It's chinese made, but the build quality is great and I'm constantly getting compliments about it's tone. A quick look at their site shows they're not in stock, but you might find one if you look around. Thomann has them if you are willing to buy without trying.

It's got humbuckers so the tone will be a lot different to the precision.
