Photographer doesn't provide jpeg images

I have enquired with a professional photographer about obtaining some graduation photos taken.

I would have thought it would be possible to also purchase the jpegs on a CD, but the photographer has informed me that he won't release or sell jpeg images for the customer to print out themselves because the quality obtained would be of a lower standard than that produced by the photographer's own lab and could therefore have a bearing on his reputation.

Is this usual, as I have seen other photographers state on their website that they can provide a CD with the jpegs for a small additional payment?

What do you think of the reason they give for not providing the jpegs?

If you want JPG images then tell him you'll take your custom somewhere else if he can't provide them. If he still doesn't want to then go get your grad pics taken somewhere that does. Ultimately it's his decision, they're his pictures.

Sounds reasonable enough actually. The color and quality of the images could be way off depending on what kind printer, ink and color space you use.

I think he gave a legitimate reason.

Do you want them for facebook or whatever? You could say this, and he may give you low-res watermarked images.

It's reasonable enough to expect the photographer to want to supply their own prints.

Although this is common enough practice I completely disagree with it.

Take your business elsewhere and make sure to have it in the contract that full size jpegs will be included.

    Thanks dantastic.

I always have the option of simply using the official photographer on graduation day, and I know they do supply a CD with the jpegs for a small additional fee.

I've heard of this done before - but I always feel that the reason isn't really to do with reputation, but rather to do with not making any more money off the shot once the jpg is given out.

Once you have the jpg, you can't print it out all you want for family and friends. If the photographer keeps the image, they can charge grannies, aunites etc for that image should they want it.

What he meant to say I think!

quite a few of my photography customers dont provide hi res digital files.

mainly because the quality that someone else will print to isnt what they would. and then when other people see they they are put off

and i know this does happen. it ISNT always about money for some of these photographers

If they give out the digital image someones spawn who "is great with computers" will have a go at "improving" it with photoshop & leave the photographers watermark on it
