Unable to pay hospital bill/Medical Card

    Hello all,

I am not sure if this is posted in the correct section but it's the closest I could find, so here goes...

I broke my leg a few weeks back and spent 18 days in hospital. I had been unemployed from September 2013 up until June 2014. I started working in June on a 10 week contract but due to my injury I am not longer able to work.

My hospital bill came today for €750.00 which needs to be paid in 1 month to avoid any charges. I won't be able to pay this.

I had been eligible to apply for a Medical Card since September but due to my own laziness/stupidity I never did. Is it possible to apply for a Medical Card now to cover the hospital bill? Either way I will need to contact the hospital to explain my financial situation as my disability will only allow me to claim €188 per week from the Social Welfare. Is it normal practice for hospitals to give extra time to people in my situation or are they demanding?

    Thanks

Contact the hospital, and the HSE in writing and ask.

    I think you can.
My wife was in hospital for several weeks a couple of years ago.
I had to take carers leave from work to look after kids ect.
On leaving hospital my wife asked one of the nurses about
the bill and nurse told her to apply for medical card and
just give the hospital the card number when it comes through.

Contact the accounts department at the hospital you were in
and inform them you are waiting for a medical card.

Hopefully that will work for me. I have just applied for the card today. Fingers crossed. Thanks
