Yes!At least to listen to and look at some of my fellow work colleagues.I'm sick hearing things like, "I NEED a coffee before I can start this" or "I gotta get a coffee before I can face the day" or the classic "I cant function in the mornings without a cup of coffee".What tosh. These are grown adults I'm talking about ffs.And all they do some of them is dress window mannequins!
I have nothing against coffee, its an ok drink.I know about the effects of caffeine but jesus some people make out like it gives them the huge boost they need just to function!Muppets.Too much Sex And The City.

Well you can get quite addicted to it. So they probably do need it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,750 ✭✭✭iDave

Glad its something I never got in to. Give me tea over it any day. In my experience its usually middle aged people who need the 'boost', fair enough not as young as they used to be or girls in late teens and 20s showing off how grown up they now are.

It is not. It provides the ten minutes I can reliably enjoy on a daily basis, no matter what's going on.

It's a rather innocent addiction... I am the same with chewing gum. I cannot study, do an exam and even sometimes I cannot exercise without it. I used always perform in sports better whilst chewing gum when I was younger and would be in a right state without it. More often than not it's a psychological thing and not the actual coffee/gum in my case

I'm not trying to slow anyone down but can an adult not just get out of the bed in the morning and 'function' as humans have done for millenia?I mean these people I'm talking about do manage to get the bus/train/bike into work perfectly fine. And thats before the glorious life enabling first coffee of the day.

I'm confused about the Sex and the City muppet reference. I do like my cups of black velvet, but they don't make me wear a ballgown out for a screechy brunch with Miss Piggy and the girls.

    Maybe I need another espresso.

Oh midnight oil welling on the hob... :pac:

What the OP is saying is like "You're already awake!" to someone who says "I not awake yet". Technically correct but completely missing the point. Its ritualistic, its a mental and physical boost to aid the transitioning from sleep addled zombie to functioning human being. And its a veritable taste sensation to lift ones spirits as they once again continue the drudgery of life.

Slightly off topic, but I'll never forget the fat kid standing on the ramp in the skatepark all day

"I cant do any tricks cos I haven't had any red bull"

    He was serious...

Personally I've only recently started drinking coffee, 1 at breakfast, 1 cup of tea in the evening. Dunno if i like it or not but definitely like the idea of it, a bit like exercise and early nights.

As shot of coffee before training does result in longer lasting energy from a few reliable sources (tabloids and the internet) so I'll continue to enjoy it moderately, one thing I'm not a fan of is the stain coffee and tea leaves on teeth, I use plenty of milk which makes it look less stainish, tastier and drinkible within half an hour. Tried green tea a few times but the aftertaste is on par with cod liver oil - a bulimics foe.

Those 5"2 girls you see in NY at 5am carrying an el grande or "a pint" of coffee on the way to work wear sunglasses for a reason...

I don't think you have much of a grasp on how sleep works. Or concentration. Or, you know, the simple pleasures in life and how to not get bothered by other people's beverages.

No not bothered by any beverage at all.I already said coffee is an ok drink in the op.Its how some people hold it up on some sort of pedestal as being neccessary to function as an adult human being. Its a little sad really.

    ankaragucu wrote: »

    sure.

the smell of coffee invokes a special emotion, one that is only really matched by the first sip of coffee in the morning. it is joy, the love of life, and the reaction of the caffeine in your system. The warmpth of the drink overpowers you, and somehow you know the day will turn out ok.

to put another perspective on it, i woke late this morning and didnt have the time to make a proper coffee, so nothing was done this morning even though i turned up on time.

    also, i hate hyperbole.

Yeah but coffee helps to cure laziness as its a stimulant.

I live for my coffee in the mornings and I don't like Horse in The City. I'm up at maybe 5am with a toddler. Maybe it's not really giving me that buzz but I think it is and that's all that matters! After I have my first cup, I feel ready to do the chores. It also really helps you have a dump in the morning ;)

gives me bad acid indigestion, can't drink the stuff anymore :( used to like chilling out with a coffee somewhere, take away that is, not quite the same with tea, although some nice tea and toast in a cafe is hard to beat!

Coffee is only over-rated for those with bad taste.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,934 ✭✭✭Renegade Mechanic

I have the odd cup. Dont mind the taste. But I can genuinely go to bed after a mug at night and still fall asleep without much trouble so I dont get the general consensus about "effects" of it.

Just as I thought, most people commenting here are the pro coffee is amazing brigade. After all that coffee drinking you're expending the copious amounts of energy its given you how?By talking about coffee drinking.

I agree with the OP. There's nothing more frustrating than delaying starting work or a task because someone "hasn't had a coffee yet". It's hot water and a few f*cking berries. I was in a meeting a few weeks ago and vetoed a few people ducking out for "a quick coffee" and I swear to God the heads on them were priceless. Needing a hot drink to start work is a load of effete and limp-wristed b*llocks.

You'd swear it was f*cking methamphetamine the way people go on about it.

Out of my way, I need to RUN to get a choco mocha cappa bullsh*t thing before I catch my train!

Hold on, I'll just stick my sunglasses on top of my head as I'm in a whilrl!

OK, I've got my frapa capa thing...mmmmm....oh that's good coffee, but you know you can't get good coffee in this country.

When I was on the J1 in Toronto, I did the coffee run for the guys and they had this nice, like shop somehwere down the street, think it was called Waynes Coffee, or something, nothing like Starbucks, it was DIVINE!

I'm in my super stressful job, it's like I need the adrenaline, and I just NEED my coffee in the morning or I don't function, OUT OF MY WAAAYYYY!!!!

How is it a scam ? I also never said what you have in inverted commas there. I said transitioning from sleep addled zombie to fully functioning human being.

I'm not bothered citing anything but of you care to check you'll find plenty of evidence to show that people do not function at peak performance or are even fully alert just after waking up and there is also plenty of evidence to show caffeine has an effect on people and their alertness.

So there is no scam nor is it delusional to drink coffee for a little boost to help you in your day. Its not laziness either its just people rituals or routine to drink the beverage of their choice for a little physical and psychological boost. I think you're taking the "I cannot function without coffee" statements a little too literally. They don't actually think without coffee they will seize up and cease to function.

Used to drink it everyday 10 times a day never to wake me up, that's something it can't do, but instant coffee is only ****e now so I just have a latte once a week or that.. Tea 10 times a day now

People who say they need coffee are idiots. They need the ritual that coffee offers, but they can have it with a multitude of other things. They're brainwashed, so coffee it is.

If these sheep knew the effects of caffeine or were somehow effected by them, this 'need' would magically disappear.

    Which is better:

Living in a way that means your naturally energized or going around like a zombie and wanting a 'quick fix' of some pretentious, overpriced coffee that's served with your name on the cup to make you feel more important than you are and not the mere pawn you actually are in some corporations bid to take over the world?*

    *Slight exaggeration.

God, it really was, wasn't it? It's true though. And maybe that hurts some people.

No I understand some people do actually like coffee. I myself like it occasionally, but I'll drink decaf and I don't 'need it'.

It's the gang of muppets who deem it fashionable to go parading a Starbucks cup around on their way to work. Surely, it would be nicer to have it at your desk.

I think you'll find the phrase "need a coffee" is meant tongue in cheek. Very few genuinely believe things will grind to a halt without coffee.

I love coffee. It doesn't particularly give me a boost or keep me awake. I just like the smell and taste of it. If the fact that I do annoys anyone then good, they're exactly the type of people I would like to annoy.
