Washer machine causing clunks in water tank

We replaced our old washing machine a few days ago and the occasional clunking noise coming from the tank that we were hearing before has become much more common and definitely related to the washing machine.

A bit of googling suggests it could be caused by the water hammer effect although from what I can see of the pipework the washing machine is fed from the mains. Is it possible the shockwave is travelling up the mains feed for the water tank?

Change the attic ballcocks. That sorts it 90% of the time
