I'm a big fan of romantic comedies, preferably ones with a good moral and genuinely something to say about relationships.

My favorites in this order are:
    1. (500) Days of Summer
    2. Shallow Hal
    3. Yes Man (yeah, I know some will suggest Liar Liar, but I prefer this film as I like the idea of a totally single male in this genre, i.e. childless also)

So, others I should check out?

Crazy, Stupid, Love and Ruby Sparks would be two of my recent favourites. Definitely worth checking out!

    Enough Said, sweet little film.

As far as big Hollywood rom coms go I always thought Hitch was a pretty enjoyable one.

I can't say I would consider 500 days... A rom com though, more the exact opposite :p

Enough Said is ok, main character is a bit annoying. Worth renting

Silver linings playbook and Don Jon are probably the best I've watched from the very little I've seen :)

I generally despise this genre but I found Bridesmaids to be enjoyable enough.

Punch-Drunk Love (It's the only Adam Sandler film that I can stands, I can stands no more :D)

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days - not all Matthew McConaughey's rom coms were crap :p this one was decent, great supporting cast too and him and Kate Hudson have good chemistry

+1 for Silver Linings, really liked it.

There's two Ryan Reynolds films that are better than average too, Just Friends and a Definitely Maybe.

10 things I hate about you, silver linings and About Time would be my suggestions!

Next Stop Wonderland is one I tend to recommend - not ground-breaking or anything, but certainly more intelligent than your average "romcom". Hope Davis is excellent in it.

always liked Noting Hill myself, or It Could Happen to You, also more recently i really liked Friends with Benefits,

Which begs the question, what exactly defines a romcom? Do classic screwball comedies like The Lady Eve count? Or romances gone sour like Annie Hall? What about silent films like City Lights?

It says a lot that 500 Days of Summer and Don Jon feel likes subversions rather than conventional examples of romantic comedies. For a genre that once contained such variety it has become awfully narrow. No wonder it’s so maligned.

The classic for me is a roman holiday. Black and white and one of the first films to be shot on location is is just my fav film ever.

    Truely madly deeply

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

Just seen Ruby Sparks and loved it.

I'm making a list of all the said films in this thread, but so far Hitch is looking to be the most interesting.

    I forgot Harold and Maude

Moonrise Kingdom? I've no clue if it counts? It's a romance, with comedy, but it's primarily a Wes Anderson film so I've no clue if that changes things.
The Shop Around the Corner by Ernst Lubitsch is a bit of a gem, It Happened One Night by Capra too, both almost essential imo.

Completely support Annie Hall and Punch-Drunk Love's mentions, two of my absolute favourite films, definitely among my most watched too.

Hmmm. I'm a bit surprised that I'm struggling to think of ones. I tend to get confused where films about love and all that become romantic comedies (when I was trying to think of ones there Take This Waltz popped into my head, could you get further from a romcom?) ...not to mention I find some films really sweet that perhaps aren't meant to be (e.g. Blue Valentine).

The Sure Thing starring a young John Cusack. Miles better than Say Anything.

Chocolat (2000) with Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp. Maybe it's not a typical romance but totally worth to see. I don't really like that kind of movies, but this one was great.

Bridesmaids was hilarious in my opinion
