HELP - Student working abroad for July & August - Stolen Licence

    Hi
I'm currently working in France for July and August and I've had my purse stolen with my licence in it. I drove to France so need to have my licence on me should i get pulled over by French police.

With the new changes from Oct 2013 is there no such thing as a postal application any more?
I already held the new card licence. I could be wrong but would it not just be a case of printing another one off the system? I would have thought they would still have my picture and signature digitally on the system? I only got the card licence in July of last year after my paper one got destroyed when it got put in the wash by mistake.

Need to get something sorted ASAP in case i get stopped and there is no way I can get get back to Ireland to go to one of the centres for a replacement. Is their anything my mother could do In in Ireland in i printed off the form filled it in and sent it home ?

I don't think so there is anything you can do.
Only way is to appear in person at NDLS centre to apply for new document.

Wise thing to do for anyone to prevent such complications, would be to loose your licence while you were still in Ireland, report it lost, apply for new one, and then suddenly find the old one and keep it safe, just in case.

I thought the face to face centre was to get your photo digitally taken and your signature scanned in. That's already been done in my case as The card licence is the one that's been stolen

They must be able to do something in exceptional circumstances such as mine. I'm screwed if I get stopped by the French police and have no licence to produce to them

Phone them or email them and ask about it?

Maybe contact the Irish Consulate in France for advice OP, I'm sure it's not the first time this sort of thing has happened.

I'm on a French mobile number while I'm here. Would they give they info to my mother if she rang from Ireland ?

HAve you notified French police of the theft of your purse? I would have thought that it was fairly common for visitors to lose such documents and that a copy of a police report kept with you would be sufficient until you get your replacement.

    Go to the local consulate.
Ask them to have a copy of a letter from the licencing authority send to your home in ireland stating you have a licence in whatever category you have.
Have your mother overnight this to you.
Go back to consulate and have them translate this letter from english into french.
Have them stamp it with the official stamp of their office.
You now have proof that will do for a few weeks that the gendarm/police nationale will see is genuine.
However this wont have a photo so always have your passport with you when driving.
Also report the licence lost to the local gardai and keep a copy of the paperwork with you.

You should have all this sorted by Friday.

ps something similar happened me in the czech rep - tis a balls but the staff in irish embassies and consulates around the world are very sound and always get you sorted.

Won't be able to get to the embassy in Paris as I'm over 5 hours away from Paris and I'm working and my days off are split so a trip to Paris isn't going to work. Would the embassy be able to do this correspondence through email and post ?

I'm in France until the 3rd of September, is there no way the embassy could get a postal application done for me or something like that. The NDLS have all my details in digital format as I've already had the card licence

OP, why not just ring the consulate? They are very helpful in these matters.

Yeah I'm going to do that. my mother has been working the irish side and has gotten a letter done from the NDLS. I just need to get it translated so will have to get on to the embassy for that

Lots of French people speak English, and even if you get stopped by a Cop who doesn't, the letter can easily be scanned and translated anywhere.

Doesn't matter if they can read English or not the OP needs to find out the French law for foreign drivers who loose their driving licence and then follow them steps, getting a letter might be OK for a short time but the OP is living there for a few months.

Looks like the OP will need to get a French licence then change when they get back.

Yeah that's my problem. The letter is probably only meant last a few days not 7 weeks. It baffles me that when the NDSL have all my details including my PPS Number they can even issue a temporary card licence and that i could get the proper one when i get home.

I've tried ringing the embassy in Paris which was a complete waste of time

I can't get a French licence i don't have an address as I'm staying on a campsite for the summer

A special renewal form is available on request from the RSA for Irish people studying or on temporary work contracts abroad. You have to Email the RSA directly (not the NDLS) and they can forward one: licensingqueries@rsa.ie

Yes, they will want to post to an Irish address though. And family can forward it to you in France.
