Aer Lingus Engineer Apprenticeships 2014

Just thought I would make this thread for all talk about the apprenticeship for 2014 and I have a few questions.

Question 1: I see the requirements say a C in junior cert maths or equivalent but I didn't get a C in the junior cert, I recently completed the leaving cert and I am awaiting the results, over the past 3 years my grades have I'm proved but I seen somewhere that for a FAS apprenticeship You need a C in junior cert maths and you only need a D in leaving certificate maths , Is this true? Can anybody confirm?

Question 2: has anybody heard anything back yet?

Hope someone can answer my question and I hope to hear how you all did and

Best of luck in the selection process

not sure i know there is no age restriction on it but most years you see them take on generally young people with no skills so there starting from fresh, but i know 2 or 3 lads who where taken on at the age of 26-28 and they were all had done an apprenticeship before! fair chance for everyone

How did the interview go? I take it they've finished calling people at this point. Unfortunately!

They might be waiting for the LC results.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 mynames

And if you log onto aerlingus website under your application it says invite to pre selection online test so id say they might still be calling some people.

they must be....i have talked to about 30 people who have applied and not one of them got a call. and i was talking to an engineer up there today who said they should start calling in the next week! so hopefully we still have a chance

    Any updates?

My brother had an interview on Tuesday, aparently they are very strict on the requirements. He got a C in Leaving Cert maths so he qualified. I think once you've a C in either LC or JC your safe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 mynames

So i got a D in HL maths and didnt qualify. :/

W1hat!! Im presuming ur thinking out loud! they only want a c in junior maths ! obviously if u have ur leaving cert im sure a c in ordinary / D3 in HL would be more than enough ! Are they pushing now for top grades / a engineering degree perhaps !!! sign of the times! hopefully not and u get a call. keep us informed good luck.

Unfortunately the point there looking for is that you were able to achieve an honour in a difficult subject. That's the sort of people required in Aer Lingus, who have a track record in meeting targets and achieving good results in there LC or a record of good results in a relative/related industry. Only when they struggle to get applicants (which they more than never do) will results like that be excluded from the application process. Anyhow its not the end of the world, there are a lot more opportunities out there especially in aviation - If you are really passionate about wanting to work in EI or any airline for that matter with similar requirements why not try to repeat your maths and aim for an honour (or higher), I can tell you if you returned next year as an applicant (your file will still be displayed in your history at EI) and showing an upgrade in a result which was a requirement of entry, would look favourably on your character. Just be advised there is a lot of technical information in maintenance, a colleague of mine is upgrading his skills there at the moment and after looking at some of the study required it threw me a bit as being far more detailed in areas than command pilots would even understand relating to structures and the integrity of engines. That's the sort of role that's at play here and that's what the company is seeking is people who can grasp that and work well into the existing team.

Anyhow, best of luck to you regardless of what you pursue.

Its a minimum C3 at OL however, if they had candidates with much higher results than the requirement then they will be the candidates of choice. Generally a company will look that in your honour subjects, you received that honour. They are simply enforcing the application requirements.

Fair enough! but hard luck to all the young folk who meet their standard stated requirements ! but are not academic ,but are technically minded and hands on! sure aren't most apprenticeships Fas run! yes i agree with u they'll grab people with the highest grades ! who are not necessarily right people for the job.Ive seen 1st hand at aer lingus!

I couldn't agree more I know an engineer up there for EI and he said there are lads up there who just can't pass exams but he said there some of the best mechanics he's ever seen!

I'm more technical minded than I am academic for example I got a B3 in Technology higher level(a very hands on subject) but in maths ordinary level I got a D3. And it would be nice if people could show them that they are able for these apprenticeships even though there exams may say different.

Anyway I have a question. I am going to be doing a Pre-apprenticeship engineering PLC in September would this course meet there requirements if I was to apply next year?

I totally understand where you are coming from and I see it myself all the time, but sure that's what happens when there's managers (And certain people in HR!) that shouldn't be there in the first place as unfortunate as that is.

Again very true, and it is in my opinion deeply regrettable that it is the case. But it should be made clear this is not just the situation at Aer Lingus and alike but at nearly every major company worldwide, gone are the days where folk who know how to do a decent days work can walk in without required standard results, against those who have much higher standards but can't operate on the line (and that's happening a lot lately) - And funnily enough those people are not getting contracts renewed. But listen try to persuade a HR recruiter of the point (which many agree with!) and you might as well pluck the hair out of your head because you'll get a smile and polite, ''no thanks and f*ck off.''

This 'Fair Employment' crap does not seem to be very Fair

But it is I'm afraid, the most qualified people are getting the job - they may not have what it takes on the line (the majority do) but it is only right that those who have higher qualification spec for a job should be entitled to it. That's at nearly every company.

Just to add to the above posts.... There are guys who joined the apprenticeship program in the last couple of years who never did their leaving cert, there are guys with fantastic leaving certs, average leaving certs, engineering degrees, young and old.

The aptitude tests have a huge significance in the application process, as appears the case with almost every aerlingus vacancy.

But the problem is if you can't pass the exams then you can't get a licence making you of limited use to these companies.

This is true. There are unlicensed engineers in most airlines, most of which are very good mechanics of course, but they are from a different era. Most places wont hire an unlicensed engineer anymore.

ahh think at this stage now .outcome has been decided and yet again no p.f.o letters from aer lingus they take months to notify u if at all of rejection.

Hi guys. I had an interview last week and it was actually my second time going for interview. I'm pretty sure that if you haven't been called for interview already that you're not going to get called. Aer Lingus don't seem to communicate with candidates that did not make it to the next stage(to let them know they haven't) from my experience. I was told to expect to be contacted if I was successful sometime around Wed 20th up to maybe Mon 25th (for anyone else who had an interview).

Did you do your LC this year or last?

A bit longer than that haha
