    Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to start a postgraduate course this September and applying for the postgraduate grant. As I'm aware they only cover fees and no maintenance is available for anything over a level 8 honors degree.

Throughout my undergraduate years I have received the highest maintenance grant, and nothing has changed in terms of employment, finances at home etc. All circumstances are the same, except I have started working.

Is my income taking into account? If so, I'm afraid that I may not be entitled to the fee contribution. Also, if I declare myself dependent living at home my parents income are included, right? But if i was to declare myself independent (which I am essentially but just living at home handing up a good bit) would it just take my income into account?

    Thanks in advance :)

They count your income plus your parents income

You cannot change to independent if you are living at home. In fact you cannot change from dependent to independent unless there is a three year break in your studies.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Thanks!, I got an email back today too.

I've also found out that nobody under the age of 23 can be considered independent when applying for the fee contribution, even if you are living independently. This didn't make sense to me.
The cut off limit for applicants, and both parents is 22,307 which is exceptionally low. Even if an applicants parents where both unable to find work and on jobseekers they'd be taking just under 20,000 a year. Taking into account the applicants earnings (job or no job) they'd be easily over it.
There is however, a contribution of 2,000 euro that can be claimed which has a slightly higher income threshold.
