    Hi,
Does anyone know what the lifetime of the timing belt on a fiat punto 2001 is and how much replacement costs? The car I have has 110k and previous owner never changed it? Car was cheap so just wondering if I could get away with it for a while? Also if it was going ( excuse my ignorance!) would it be making any sound? Thanks in advance !

Change interval is 70k miles. It's a non-interference engine, so if the belt does go it just means putting a new one on, there's no damage to the engine possible. A decent garage should be able to fit one in about an hour and a half, two hours tops, and the belt kit is about €50. I wouldn't bother fitting a water pump in this case unless the old one is leaking or making noise.

They're possibly the simplest belt to do if you want to try and DIY it, and since it's non-interference there's no chance of messing it up. Just a regular socket set is needed.

Only the 1.2 8 valve is non interference, 16 v IS an interference engine.

Only the 6spd Sportings have the 16v engines.

HLX model is 16v and 5 speed, as are some uk import ELX models.

OP, 8 valve has the air filter on top of the engine and a little tube running off it to the drivers side

    This sort of thing

In real world terms, there are currently two non-Sporting 16vs for sale in the country out of 330 mk2 Puntos. So there's a 99.4% chance it's an 8v. I have literally never seen a HLX in person. They are badged as 16v also.
