Lec fridge freezer broken

We have a Lec fridge freezer that's about 6 years old. It was making some odd noises for about a week or so. Yesterday it started making a very loud gurgling noise and the freezer started to defrost. The temperature display is showing the freezer temp as -24 and the fridge temp as anything between 2 and 12 degrees, it varies. We've had to take everything out of the freezer and put it in a chest freezer. The fridge itself is now lukewarm.

I know we've had our monies worth out of it at this point but times being what they are replacing it is an expense that we could really do without. I'm just wondering if this is something we could fix ourselves/have an engineer fix or does it sound like it's had it's day and we should just save the engineers fee and buy a new one? Advice appreciated.

if the unit is lukewarm and is running without freezing it has leaked the refrigerant, thats the end of it, if the unit has stopped running and it is heating up in the fridge section it has a faulty thermostat which is well worth replacing

When you say 'that's the end of it' do you mean it's time for a new one?
I've an eight-year-old Bosch fridge/freezer which is making a whirring sound and is not longer cold. Really don't want to buy a new one this side of Christmas so hoping to get it fixed... is that impossible?

if you can hear the compressor running and it is not making ice in both cabinets you can be almost 100% certain it has a refrigerant leak internally in the pipe work , pointless regassing it will leak again.

And so...the inevitable follow up question:
What kind of new fridge/freezer should I get?!

Want something of a decent size and will fork out for quality. But not bothered by anything too giant or too snazzy. Just a stand-alone fridge freezer to keep the milk cool and the ice-cream frozen.

How much should I expect to pay and are there any brands to avoid/embrace?
