    from hkud
Fantastic free cross-platform cross-browser password manager; premium allows you to use the Android/iOS apps.

If you're using the same password for each site, it's time to change!

    Go to
    http://anything-digital.com/my-subscriptions.html
go to the offers tab, and there it is

Not as good, lastpass offers much more, better browser integration including Dolphin browser add-on for smartphones (premium only but worth it, I've been paying it for 3 years)

As a former LastPass user who moved to Dashlane two years ago, this will be handy to try both and figure out which one is for me.

I will admit, however, that Dashlane is far more attractive and user friendly, whilst it offers the receipt management and tools.

Thanks, OP, I'm looking forward to trying this.

Lastpass is very good, particularly if you're someone who has never used a password manager before. I also like their openness and willingness to admit security errors and problems - that's very important where you are placing your trust in a password storage service.

horses for courses tbh, i use both but for different things.

i prefer lastpass for managing website passwords centrally when using more than one browser or computer, but keepass for work to manage logging in to multiple remote servers and that kind of thing.

that said, can't knock a free 6 month upgrade to premium. :)

Cheers OP.. big fan of Lastpass here so this is great.

    Intrigued about Dashlane now though...

Been using the free add on for chrome for nearly 2 years and find it amazing.

Thanks for the heads up OP.

Also, does this just bump you back to a 'normal' account after 6 months?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

I would imagine so, as it doesn't look for payment details when getting the 6 months free.

Yes, just gives added smartphone and tablet support. Without premium you have to copy and paste from the Lastpass app. With premium there is an add-on for Dolphin browser which can sign you in automatically the same as the Chrome extension

ye, but it's free and open, just threw it up as an option. I don't and wouldn't use any of them myself, cuz of just this sort of thing...

“Severe” password manager attacks steal digital keys and data en masse
For almost two years, Ars has advised readers to use a software-based password manager to ease the password fatigue that comes from choosing and securing dozens of hard-to-guess passcodes that are unique to each site or service. A research paper scheduled to be presented at a security conference next month underscores the hidden dangers of selecting the wrong products.
The researchers examined LastPass and four other Web-based managers and found critical defects in all of them. The worst of the bugs allowed an attacker to remotely siphon plaintext passcodes out of users' wallets with no outward sign that anything was amiss. LastPass and three of the four other developers have since fixed the flaws, but the findings should serve as a wakeup call. If academic researchers from the University of California at Berkeley can devise these sorts of crippling attacks, so too can crooks who regularly case people's online bank accounts and other digital assets.

Why passwords have never been weaker—and crackers have never been stronger

Thanks to real-world data, the keys to your digital kingdom are under assault.

"Widespread adoption of insecure password managers could make things worse: adding a new, untested single point of failure to the Web authentication ecosystem," the researchers wrote in their paper, titled The Emperor's New Password Manager: Security Analysis of Web-based Password Managers (PDF). "After all, a vulnerability in a password manager could allow an attacker to steal all passwords for a user in a single swoop. Given the increasing popularity of password managers, the possibility of vulnerable password managers is disconcerting and motivates our work."

Yes open, free, does not have the same features and has nothing to do with this BA as it is not an option to anyone using Lastpass and looking for premium.

But for the "ordinary" person, you're comparing an obscure and unlikely attack versus the much more likely prospect that they re-use the same passwords repeatedly on multiple websites. There is no such thing as perfect security. and in my book the use of something like lastpass with individual strong passwords is a far better alternative for most people.

    I can see their point.

People are over saturated with complicated passwords. Theres a point at which they become impossible to remember. Recording them to a single point like a password system, helps but its single point of weakness aswell. the fall back is to write them down as they get harder to remember. Another weakness.

You here to troll? First you go against the grain to recommend Keepass in a Lastpass BA thread, then you keep dragging the thread off topic with other posts about why you shouldn't use a password manager. This thread is about a BA those of us who already use Lastpass will find useful. Go post about security issues and vulnerabilities in the security forum.

I don't think he is being a troll, this BA isn't exclusively for people who already have LastPass. It's good to know what alternatives are available, as well as the pros and cons of using a password manager.

Lastpass is free. Premium Lastpass is of little use to someone who doesn't already use Lastpass, Lastpass features are free, the only thing premium adds is Dolphin browser integration for smartphones and tablets as opposed to copying and pasting usernames and passwords from the Lastpass app.
