    hi guys!

i just started taking driving lessons recently and ive noticed that for the past few lessons my driving instructor meets me in rathgar and then drives to nearby areas about 15 mins away, and then he drives about 15 mins back to go back t owhere we arranged to meet up. this leaves me with less than an hour to practice driving , altho he does tend to go 'over' a bit so i drive for a bout 35-40 mins (i think...... but i do forget to keep count:() before we finish up. Im jsut wondering if this is normal, like do ye guys have the same amount of time during lessons or would it be diff? I find it strange that he hasnt asked me to meet at the place where we actually practice becaues that would mean we wouldnt use so much time driving from one place to another :|

we used ot practice near rathgar but he said the areas we drove on recently are much quieter and have longer roads.

    any ideas guyyyes?

    Aoife! xoxo

How long are your lessons supposed to be? An hour? If you are paying for a one hour lesson, you should be getting one hour of driving time behind the wheel. The instructor should not be spending just as much time driving the car as you are. If he wants to do the bulk of the lesson a 15 minute drive away from where you meet up, then you should be the one doing the driving to and from that location. If he feels that you are not ready to handle the driving conditions to/from that location, then he needs to rethink where he is taking you to drive. I think you need to have a chat with him about wasting so much of your driving time.

Say someone lives in the city center of Dublin .
    Cant drive . 1st lesson .
Should an instructor take time to drive them somewhere quiet and safe and then give them the hour in full and charge them solely for an hour .?
Things may not be clear as day

If I was from the center of Dublin then I'd get the bus out to meet my instructor at his/her preferred DRIVING location... If I've paid for a 1 hour lesson ,I'd want to drive for an hour... Unless I really really can't drive .at all .

If you live in the heart of the city centre, there are ample bus/trains/trams to take you to where the instructor thinks would be a good place for you to learn how to drive. If you insist on being picked up and dropped home, then yes, that is different.

Rathgar is not the heart of the city centre. There are plenty of quiet residential roads in and near Rathgar where a learner could be taken to learn the initial ropes, especially if you are doing it at a sensible time to be learning, such as weekends or non rush hour times during the week. It is definitely a built up area, but there is no way that the instructor needs to spend 15 minutes driving somewhere else, to officially start the lesson.

can u tell me what the quiet areas near rathgar are? we used to practice nearby but it was busier than the place we practice now. also not sure if u were replying to the guy above me or me but just in case! :) the instructor doesnt pick me up and drop me off at home, i just thought it would be better to meet in rathgar cos it was the area id be doing my test in :) altho i have wondered why we didnt just meet in the area that i ACTUALLY practiced driving in :O it might be cos it was only recently that we started practicing further away. :/

eefie, these are things you should be discussing with your driving instructor. If you and your instructor don't feel that you are ready for the mean streets of Rathgar, why not just tell him that you will meet him where you both feel safe and comfortable doing the lesson? If you are wondering why you don't meet in the area where you already practice in, ask him. He is the one that can you that, not us.
