    hi all,
I am looking at getting new tyres for my hybrid until I upgrade to a road bike, the tyres fitted are 46mm and was looking at getting continental gator skins (23mm).
    the wheels are 700c / 622-20.
I assume I need to get a new narrower tube?
also will the tyres be able to take me and my bike at a combined of 79kg?:o

thanks for any help in advance,

    Calum.

is that a typo? 79kg including bike and you're worried about tyres being able to handle it? :)

I'm fairly skinny and you're still substantially lighter than me & my bike combined.

You'll want thinner tubes for the new tyres.

Also consider Continental GP 4 Seasons. They're almost as puncture proof as the gatorskins but a lot of people consider them a nicer ride. Especially in the wet. Plenty of threads here with people who love or loath the gatorskins. I haven't seen anybody yet who doesn't like the GP 4 Seasons.

[edit] I just saw that you're considering 23mm. I wouldn't suggest going that low. You'll find the ride significantly harder than 28mm and there isn't actually that speed difference between 23 and 25 that you're probably thinking exists.[/edit]

looked at them also but honestly wasn't sure what to pick!

wasn't sure about the tubes so thanks for clearing that up.

    I thought that I would be fine as I'm only 5'5 and 64kg (I'm 15)
but wanted to clear things up!
    thanks for your help

Make sure the new tyres width is compatible with your existing wheels.
If you go for 23 or 25mm tyres I think they might not fit as they might not be wide enough.

I was wondering that myself but was in the local bike shop today and said they were compatible.

anyway, my circumstances have changed and am hopefully getting a road bike tomorrow.

That's great news, good luck with it. It's a world different from a hybrid with thin tyres :)

I hope my circumstances take a similar upturn in the next few hours. :)

Lol. That was a very quick upturn in fortune. Best of luck with the new bike.

Bit academic now but based on this chart from Sheldon probably shouldn't go below about 32c on 20mm rims.

OP, good luck with the new bike, hope you enjoy it.

Thanks! That made it quite clear for me!
Cheers, hopefully will have no troubles!

Is a shimano tiagra a good choice for a bike?

I have Tiagra and think it's very good.

Proper integrated shifters. Ten speed. Slightly heavier than the more expensive ones but not that much.
