One of the power pins broke on my old 80gig ide drive yesterday.
is There a way i can do a temporary fix ,so i can copy the files off it to a usb drive.
I have mint linux installed on my pc.
There,s about 20gig, of music, podcasts on it ,
but no files of any great value.
is there a piece of metal i could put in ,the power connector to the drive to make a temporary connection.
OR should i solder a wire onto the drive pcb,
AT the drive power in slot theres ,3 pins left,
the old pin is gone, with just a circular metal piece left inside,
where one of the power pins should be.
I think its the second pin from the right thats missing.
THE 2 pins, near the data connector ,are still there .
And the pin on the extreme right is still there.
I have an old 20gig ide drive ,i could use for parts,
or to take a power pin from .
The ide data 30 pin connectors are fine.
ITS the ground pin, thats broke, The ground pin , further away from the data connector,
than the ground pin on the left.
ie ata drive connector, has two middle pins, both ground ,connectors.

if you're handy with a soldering iron, just solder a lead onto the PCB and feed it into the back of the power cable. IF you could post pics it would be more helpful, that way we could see if you could bridge it with a metal in or not, rather than soldering....

    I,ll post a pic later,
would it be safe to try and boot up ,the drive,
USING A live cd, to boot up the pc.
would the drive work normally ,with one ground, pin, missing,
With no other drives IDE or Sata, connected to the motherboard.

Apart from 1 ide drive ,with the missing pin.
ie pc would be booted up from a live version of linux,
    on a 1gigabyte usb pendrive.
From looking at the drive, theres a circle of plastic ,with maybe a bit of flat round metal inside it, ie a small metal flat disc ,

    which connected to the pin
but the pin is completely gone.
ir there s no part of the pin left,or sticking out past the plastic circle.
The pin went in thru the plastic circle ,before it broke off .

pins 2 and 3 are both ground, and *should* be common ground. Personally I'd just plug in the drive, load the live CD and see if the drive is detected....

ok, i,ll try that,if it doesn,t detect the 80gig ide drive,
I,LL switch off the pc ,immediatly.
    Thanks for the advice.

    I,M using linux Runto , live, 1gig usb drive,pendrive.
i can see all the files ,and folders,
I,m copying all the files to an external usb 350gig drive.
    Thanks for the advice,
    it seems to working fine.
the ide 80 gig drive is 10 plus ,years old.
    I haven,t used it since, 2008.

I got a hp pc 2 weeks ago,
so i thought i ,ll try it.
    it only has 700meg ram,
    ide interface,
    no sata ports.
    pentium 4 3.oghz cpu.single core.
    Thanks for the advice,
i was afraid to plug the drive in to the pc .
