A mate of mine is selling March 2013 Belgian blue yearling heifers out of Freisan cows, they're around the 350kg mark, what sort of money could i expect to pay for them?

What were the cows like? British fr or Ho crosses?

They're always BF when a guy is selling
They're fine and square with reasonable hips so predominantly BF...

Does anyone know how you could get the pedigree & genetics of a heifer using her ear tag, as you would a bull.
It would help in % HO/BF

Love to know this to. Is the DNA testing expensive? The aa club use it all the time so I can't see it being to bad.

I bought a good share of dairy cross heifers and knew the cows and bull they came of, they looked to be bf but all the animals with icbf came up as ho breeding. Buy the animal forget about the percentages and go from there otherwise check the animal through the owners herdplus. It will have the figures on it.

I dont think there is much bf left in the dairy herd , has anyone an idea of what % of the country's dairy herd is actually bf now ?

If you were to believe done deal , dealers and some farmers there is nothing but bf calving down

Actually this happened us too, clearing out the press couple of months back and found the genetic evaluations of all our cows. Possibly from when BLUP or something started.

Anyway, apparently we had two AU cows and five had HO breeding in their bloodlines. Never had a holstein here so I'd be questionable enough about that.

Know of 1 guy 100% BF, reckons last longer, better calves & more suited to his land

Sorry for the waffling locky , I would say they would have no problem making €900 in the mart maybe more

dovea used to be great source for BF, think they are part of munster ai now. but anytime i ordered bf recently when checking later discovered high % hol, no use reprimanding tech,if buying id prefer offspring of mountbelllarde but they're not plentiful either, think bb off bf/hol would be pushing limit at €550 down here anyway

Well if you have them again msg me and ill buy a fill of my trailer of them if they're at that money . Hard to believe there is such a difference

€2.25 a kilo at that weight. Push them to 400kg and ready to bull and maybe €2.35-40 depending on quality.

come down to marts here and watch what happens if a farmer bids on cattle , price will jump by over 100 no problem so you know whose paying and whose making money

So many factors in that it is hard to say. For a dairy farmer keeping on his oen calves and selling them at that weight it probably is leaving a small few quid. If you were buying in the calves and like this year paying €400 a head for decent ones then I would say no it is probably break even money only.

can't remember last years prices but bb/fr cross didn't make that money any time this year at mart when i was there, well over 150 less i think but could be wrong, i remember sellers at €250 and over and that was nearly confined to ch lim hd sim, piedmonteese,aa were hitting around 100-150 and that depended on farmers bidding and they were scarce, but that's this year and i could be wrong.
some simmental heifers advertised on done deal(cork) at €500 at min, how would they compare

I dont think they would compare at all to a 350 kg heifer , I would be guessing they are only around 180/220 kg .
Id say they would make the €500 here in galway alright but give them another year and they will be €900 heifers , some of them anyhow , some of them arent great looking in the picture

I saw good bb/fr cross heofer calves make €350-400 in Carnew and Enniscorthy regularly this year.Saw friesian bulls, granted at 4-6 weeks, make €150 let alone blue crosses.

my feeling is they are selling substantially better now than a while back anyhow
probably struggle to make €200 in mart as calves 3 weeks old, but in last month 300 kg + has really taken off so 15 month bbx heifers will make €900 in marts, bullocks not far behind, some one must expect big lift in factory prices for 2015 to justify paying that, there is penalty for light carcasses so factory are not buying 15 mths

    not contradicting you at all:)

ive seen fr bulls selling averaging up to recently recently at €60 ,with no farmers in ringside only buyers( or tanglers as some refer to them uncharitabley). made around €120- 160 no problem in last 3 weeks, hols or fr/jersey x less. didin't see bbx sell recently as calves on own, those i saw selling were as sucklers with cows
