Somehow we didn't pay LPT in 2012, no idea how we didn't notice buy anyway got a letter today demanding it now. Can they do that 2 years later? I mean, why didn't they notice and come looking for it even last year

Of course they can - do you really think they couldn't?!

There's a huge number of records to be combed through and audited, with their decreased staffing levels it's not really surprising they're a bit behind

The LPT was introduced in 2013.

What you may be referring to was the flat 100 euro Household Charge, for 2012.

    Household Charge Arrears

From 1 July 2013, any outstanding Household Charge liability (including late payment penalties) was increased to €200 and was included as part of the LPT liability for the property. Revenue recently wrote to property owners, who according to our records have not paid the €200 arrears.

Property owners have 14 days to respond to the letter by logging in to LPT/Household Charge arrears online (using their Property ID, PIN and PPSN) and making arrangements to pay the €200 arrears or updating their Household Charge arrears record online to confirm they have paid or are exempt/waived from the charge. Owners who require assistance or who are not the liable person for the Household Charge should contact the LPT helpline on 1890 200 255.

For those who do not respond to the letter, a range of collection/enforcement options will be utilised by Revenue to collect the Household Charge arrears, including enforced collection from a property owner’s wages or occupational pension.

If you have not paid your Household Charge, you should Login to LPT/Household Charge arrears online using your PPSN, Property ID and PIN and make arrangements to pay the €200 arrears as soon as possible. For further details please see Question 1 in the Household Charge arrears - Frequently Asked Questions.

If you paid the charge and wish to confirm that your Household Charge arrears record is correct, Login to LPT/Household Charge arrears online. If your record shows that arrears are due you should update your Household Charge arrears record online to confirm that you have already paid the charge. For further details, please see Question 6 in the Household Charge arrears - Frequently Asked Questions.

Putting your LPT affairs in order:

If you were the owner of a residential property on 1 May 2013 and you did not receive any correspondence from Revenue you are, under self-assessment rules, still liable to pay and file your LPT. Contact Revenue at 1890 200 255 as soon as possible to pay and file.

If you have not filed a return and not paid your 2013 and 2014 LPT you should pay and file as soon as possible. Guidance is available at Completing your LPT Return for 2013 and What do I need to do for 2014?

If you undervalued your property Login to LPT/Household Charge arrears online, self-correct your valuation and pay the additional liability as soon as possible. Guidance is available at: LPT Return - Self-Correction without interest or penalty - Guidelines for Residential Property Owners

If you claimed an exemption you were not entitled to Login to LPT/Household Charge arrears online, self-correct your Return and pay the LPT liability as soon as possible. Guidance is available at: LPT Return - Self-Correction without interest or penalty - Guidelines for Residential Property Owners.
Any property owner who has submitted a genuine query - whether by email, letter or voicemail to the helpline - in respect of their obligations before 2 April 2014 will be treated as having complied with their requirements on time. For this treatment to apply however, their affairs must be brought up to date promptly when the query is resolved.

If you do not have your Property ID or PIN you can Login to LPT online, provide your PPSN or Tax Reference number and submit a request for your Property ID/PIN. These details will be sent by post within 5 working days to the address on Revenue's record for the PPSN/Tax Reference number supplied by you. Alternatively, you can call the LPT helpline on 1890 200 255 to obtain your Property ID/PIN.
