Playing on your own

    Hi lads,

I'm pretty new to the game (that's my excuse for being so bad anyway!). Had a few lessons recently, and played an absolutely smashing game on Monday evening, so now I have the bug. Problem is, I work shift, so I'm off all day sometimes just itching to go out, is it weird to head out on your own? I'm a member of a course, so really can head out when ever it suits me, I'm just curious is it a done thing to head out and play on your own.

    Cheers!

Not weird at all, lots of us here on shift, I go out alot on my own and hit a few balls, as long as im not holding anyone up I do it alot, I also play in opens midweek you can go out early or late depending on shift patters aswell, dont be afraid to throw your name down beside people you dont know, I do it alot, have met some good friends by doing it aswell!!

I often do it if I manage to play during the week. Actually like it and can practice a few things without slowing anyone else down. I could be on the course for 7am on a summers morning and out of there by 10am

At weekends I'd usually play in club competitions

I can never understand people asking this question.

Playing on your own is great peace and quiet. Enjoy.

Cheers lads. I've witnessed it myself a number of times, was curious if it was the norm. Actually looking forward to it, it'll be nice not having 3 lads giving me conflicting tips after every shot!

I used to play with myself loads but my eye sight got worse!!

But seriously its a great way to practice much better than the range I believe.

Remember there is only one way of getting better at playing golf and that's hitting balls and enjoying it!!

Ah golf on your own. There really is no better way the spend a few hours than rambling along with only the sounds of the birds in the trees to keep you company. Absolute bliss.

I paly most of my golf on my own. As dar said, mainly shift reasons.

I don't think it suits all personality types. But it is very relaxing - fast and good for your game - you play a bit more too, as it can be impromptu. As can try that chip and run from 6 locations.

It is good if you have something on your mind - or nothing at all.

    But not for everybody.

I probably play 90% off my golf on my own, before or after work midweek.
    Very enjoyable.

Or you would have to play 72 holes to see.

I play a lot of golf by myself, find it great for practising and as mentioned great for throwing a few balls down to try out a few shots around the greens.

Although I find it counter productive some times to play too many balls from tee to green takes the focus off hitting a good shot and can lead to poor results . I always play one ball out on each hole . And try to limit it to that .

Actually played by myself this morning before work , 6am playing in Corballis on a fresh summer morning I'd actually struggle to pick somewhere else I'd rather be. So much so that that's exactly where I'll be tomorrow morning again . Something quiet satisfying about wondering around having the place to yourself .

I got a last minute invite to play a round of golf yesterday which I had to turn down cause I had to work, but since then I had such an itch to play golf it wasn't funny.

Ended up being on the teebox at 5.20am this morning and being in work for 8 !

That itch well and truely scratched !! :D

Fair play and I thought I was nuts! Played 9 holes on my own last night at 8.30pm- home for 2nd half of the match! I find it very relaxing- I've never tried the pre 7am golf shift......hmmm!

While I prefer playing with others, more often than not I'm out on my own.
As everyone suggested it's great to just take your time and play more shots than normal, I find it useful for bunker practice etc.

If the course if completely empty I occassionally try the FIG (F**k I'm Good) method that Luke Donald and Dave Alred use, hit three balls, for each shot, play the best one repeatedly, shows yourself that you have a decent round in you!!

I usually play at about 4pm during the summer.
No pressure, no waiting between shots.

Course is deserted and I can do what I want.
Playing two balls in from 100yds and 2 in from 50yds.
Playing two balls into the Par 3's etc etc.

It's one of life's great pleasures.

    bring plenty of balls

Not unusual at all, I practice two evenings a week and both of them are on my own.

Pretty relaxing, course if quiet and definitely play my best golf when I'm on my tod. Everyone feels calmer and slower, and my swing tempo reflects that. Trying really hard to bring it into the weekend comps. But find it frustrating the amount of people that want to rush a four hour game :(

Yep! Nothing is worse than how disgusted you feel hitting 3 shíte shots though!! :p

Playing on your own is great.. A - You win every time B - Nobody gives out if you hit a few balls and practice around the greens..

A great game I was shown is have 3 balls in the pocket..

You hit a ball and then decide if you want to use it or not, if you don't you can hit upto 3 balls and you have to use the last one.. The aim though is to score as low as you can using as few 2nd/3rd balls as you can

Na maybe just me. When I'm playing with 3 balls I'm losing balls. Somehow :D for me they don't end all up in the same spot and eventually some get away.

I love playing on my own, got into a nice routine there for a couple of months of nine holes on a Friday afternoon. Twice, when fellas asked to join me, I felt bad for being so cross on the inside!

    Sounds good, you never lose!
Great positive thoughts going home with a win every time ;)

To be honest I'm working on getting away from 1 ball and regular golf when alone. I do like playing a full round finding out where my game is.
I got so stuck up on the score.

But from reading a few things on here - I seen I wasn't getting the most out of what is a great practice opportunity.

So it has helped me improve a good bit.

Karl Morris recommends playing 2 balls and always playing your worst ball.
That way when your in a comp it will be a lot easier hopefully.

work shift as well, often play just on my own, I like it, and in fact sometimes prefer it. It is a great way of practice, and you can often play V par and it will keep you motivated.

I recently won a sun morn comp after coming off a 12 hour night shift, with 3 hours sleep the day before !

Sounds like a standard round for me, when your worst is a choice between a rock and a hard place! :pac:

Out for 9 this evening on my own. What a way to unwind after work. Just me the hares and the ducks.

    Pure bliss

I'd play alot on my own too . If I didn't I simply would not of got any better . Iv friends that play but might only get out once every couple of weeks . And with my addiction to the game that's just not enough .

When I play on my own I played 2 ball better ball . I find it's great to keep myself in a competitive zone right till the end .

Played Fota Island this morning on my lonesome. Teed off at 7.35 and was done and dusted for 10.30. Absolute bliss, didn't see a living sole for the entire round!!
