Companies who advertise the same position over and over

What do you think of companies you see advertising the exact same position over and over?

There's a couple of medical device and high end engineering companies I've seen do this but their requirements for the candidate are very demanding and really specific too. I assume these companies just can't find the person as they're too demanding.

There's other companies I've noticed who are in more general engineering, good enough locations relatively speaking, aren't that demanding in their job specs but seem to advertive every 6 months to a year.

When you see a company advertising over and over what do you think?

High staff turnover, poor conditions, or massive massive growth?

Maybe they're increasing their staff numbers every 6 months.

They could well be, I don't know.

Though increasing the staff level every 6 months would lead to them doubling their eng staff very quickly I'd imagine.

I'm not saying this isn't the case but I do wonder.

If they're big enough, then even with a low turnover there will still be some vacancies every few months.

Some are big and some are not so big but all the jobs would be specific engineering roles (with at least a degree) which require a number of years experience (usually 2 to 3 years).

Donnybrook Fair have been advertising the exact same position for at least the past four months. I went for an interview for the position four months ago and didn't get it. It makes me wonder if there was even a position in the first place or if they were just keeping their options open.

Edit: I just remembered, during the interview I asked the interviewer which of their branches the job was for, and he couldn't answer the question. His response was "We don't know, we just interview people and see which branch they would fit in best at." Ehhhh......

I've no problem with companies building up a database of potential employees, but it is completely wrong to knowingly trick people into believing they're being interviewed for an actual available position, instead of being honest about what the interview is for.
