Renewing a learner permit for a third time

    Hello,

Can someone help me, I live in the UK and my learner permit (2nd one) is up at the end of July. I am wondering how can I renew it and thus not have to sit theory test again etc. Can I do it online or via post or have to do it in person? I am not due home again until September. I have been forwarded on the forms that arrived in the post at home. One final question, if I leave my learner permit expire without doing anything, is there a time limit that I can renew again or is that it, once the expiry date is reached I have to begin again from scratch like applying for the first time all over again?

    Many thanks for the help.

You can let it expire if you like. You have five years after the expiry date to renew it before you revert back to complete "newbie" mode. You'll have to turn up in person at an NDLS office here in order to renew it, and also bear in mind that in order to get a third or subsequent learner permit you'll need to produce evidence of either a) a forthcoming driving test appointment, in which case you'll get a one-year permit or b) having recently failed a driving test, in which case you'll get a two-year permit.

Thanks for the information. I only took one driving test that was in December 2012 needless to say the result did not exactly go my way, is that recent enough do you know? Again thanks for the reply.

Actually yes - according to citizensinformation.ie, the preceding two-year period is valid for driving tests.
