There is a major difference between front and rear fog lights. If you cant tell the difference don't bother turning them on.

Rear fog lights are a 'D' shape with little lines coming from BEHIND it

Front fog lights are also a 'D' shape with the little lines IN FRONT of it

Now you can drive safely and not potentially blind someone behind you.

It takes five seconds to read a text message on your phone. During that time your car can have travelled the length of a football pitch. Leave your phone alone.

My no. 1 #drivesafer tip for travelling at home or abroad this year is to :

always use mirrors and indicators. Irish drivers have a habit of forgetting about these and its important to check your mirror and indicate.

even if no car is behind you, indicate your intentions , its a good habit to keep.

In France drivers must carry a high-visibility vest in their vehicles.
In Vienna, it's illegal to use your car horn while it’s against the law to run out of fuel on an autobahn in Germany.
Most European nations recommend carrying a spare bulb kit which will allow you to change your headlamps in the event of a problem.
If you're heading to Spain or France you must carry this spare bulb kit by law.

Waving a toy gun intimidates other road users and makes them think you are a hard man!

Don't ignore warning lights on your dashboard, and learn some basic car maintenance (new oil, water, washer fluid, changing filters, how to use jumper cables, how to change a tyre etc.).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,324 ✭✭✭✭Cathmandooo

Never text and drive, it's not worth the risk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 863 ✭✭✭goldenhoarde

Give your car the once over before you leave home. check water oil tyre pressure etc. Check that the spare is roadworthy and at the correct pressure and make sure you have all the tools (loc nuts!!!! make sure you know where the key is for these - its no good at home!) and hi vis jackets needed to change a tyre day or night.

Observation. Be aware of what is going in the near/middle/far distance ahead and behind you. Use your mirrors and check you blind spots. This will reduce the chances of the unexpected happening.

Awareness, once you are aware of what you and others are doing and may be about to do then there are no surprises and this will give you enough time to react to almost any given situation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 693 ✭✭✭Mr321

Keep within the speed limits and just because the speed limit is eg 80km on a road doesnt mean that you have to drive at 80km the whole time, take the road conditions into consideration. Also keep a nice distance from the edge of the road especially on bends as there maybe people walking and cyclists on the road.

When driving through residential areas,  keep an eye out for little feet moving towards you between cars. And footballs.  Kids always run after them.

Never push your luck with tyres, those few inches of rubber are all that's keeping your car on the road.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,119 ✭✭✭Tails142

If you ever feel fatigued on a long drive always pull over and take a short rest break. A 15 minute cat nap or a cup of coffee is a great way to refresh yourself.

Every so often give your car a check up, check tire pressure and threads, window washer, water and oil levels. Make sure that all your equipment and tools are in the car, jack, wheel brace, spare wheel, jump leads, a high vis jacket, safety triangle, first aid kit.

Drive at a correct speed and respect other road users too

Honestly this is the one that is going to sound like the most useless suggestion but I see it every day that people are letting themselves get distracted while driving. It is not always a mobile phone. It can be make up or a newspaper. If people actually bothered to focus on driving while behind the wheel it would make a big difference. Liberty lads, I know this wont win any prizes but it needs to be said.

Take an interest in your driving and practice for the unexpected.

What I mean is do the occasional full emergency stop on an empty road or private ground. You'll learn what ABS is. You'll learn to press harder on the peddle when the ABS system is kicking back and won't be frighted when it happens in a worse situation. You'll learn how long it takes a car to stop at speed which is a guaranteed eye opener. You'll learn you can safely steer whilst breaking.

Too many people are flying along on roads with no idea how a car behaves or how long it will take them to stop should they need to.

You really don't want to be experiencing/learning all the above for the first time trying to avoid the car/child that just appeared in front of you.

When driving in a foreign country take your time and acclimatise to that countries roads and rules by driving around the car rental pickup area and don't speed.

ALWAYS obey the 2 Second Rule,
'Only a fool breaks the two second rule'.

In wet weather say this to yourself twice when driving. Watch the road ahead and keep a safe distance from vehicle in front.
    Arrive alive

slow down any time there is a blind spot anywhere, it doesn't matter how clear you think the way will be, you won't have time to react for the unexpected, this is why similarly you should stay as far back from the cars in front of you as you reasonably can.

  • Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators Posts: 11,183 Mod ✭✭✭✭MarkR

Stealth mode (driving with no lights in poor conditions) is not cool. There is a massive difference in your visibility with / without lights on, particularly when it is raining. Parking lights are not suitable for driving with in heavy rain, no matter how cool your fog lights look with them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 89 ✭✭Jeefff

'Driving slower on country roads'. No hard braking and acceleration needed, and saving on your tyres, deisel, and most likely lives

No matter how quick you think it is to check your phone for a text or take a call, even in a split second anything could happen. It's not worth it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,703 ✭✭✭green123

    slow down

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,110 ✭✭✭Skrynesaver

Rain after a dry period makes for a very slick surface, double your expectations of braking time and allow a suitable distance to stop.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 185 ✭✭Auscast

If you're driving in Europe (like I was a few weeks ago) with a car full of precious family, you can sometimes be distracted by the kids, making driving on the other side of the road dangerous, especially coming out of service stations or onto roundabouts etc.
So my top tip is to attach a small (A5) size piece of paper or card behind your steering wheel on your dashboard with an arrow pointing to the right. The image will reflect up into your windscreen (like a HUD) and be a constant reminder of which side of the road you should be driving on.

    Slow down!
If driving abroad, familiarise yourself with the road signs and rules of the road in other countries.......and stick to the proper side of the road!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 255 ✭✭remeneerb

Always keep a safe distance between yourself and the car ahead as you need enough time to react if that car suddenly swerves, stops or turns - never tailgate!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 888 ✭✭✭magicray

Always leave a decent distance between you and the car in front, lots of accidents would be prevented if everyone followed this rule

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

The tyres are the only thing in contact with the road, hence they're the most important part of your vehicle. Don't buy cheap rubbish, and keep an eye on them (wear, pressures, etc).

Turn your phone off. You won't miss anything important enough to risk your life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 256 ✭✭arodabomb

Just chill out. You're not going to get there any/much quicker swerving around bikes/peds/slow moving vehicles.

If somebody's doing something crazy up ahead, there's probably a reason for it. Again chill out. The amount of times  I've had to stop because somebody came out wrong/down the wrong way etc, and then somebody else has seen that I'm stopped, assumed I'm doing so for no reason, swerved around me and nearly killed someone.

On a cold morning, give yourself a few minutes for the windows to defrost/ clear.. It's much easier to see where you're going!

Make sure your insurance policy covers you for driving abroad. If you are hiring a car take out Fully insurance for peace of mind.
