    Hi all,
Sorry this may sound a silly question but am fairly new to this cycling malarkey and my wife entered me into an 80km cycle in august(fathers day present -took me a while to digest)

I have rarely cycled before and am looking for a bit of training advice. Im fit enough had done lots of running(2 marathons last year) but pretty much injured for full year. Want to do well enough and wondering what kind of distances should be doing, how many times per week. Managed about 45k yeseterday longest had ever

Firstly, and most importantly, don't make training a task. Make it enjoyable. If you enjoy pushing yourself then that's great, but add something to keep it fun, such as scenic routes or heading out with a group. Mix it up so that you're never bored. If you can keep the enjoyment then training is a breeze.

If you can do 45 km now then 80 km should be well within your ability.

Next weekend do 50 with 2 or 3 shorter midweek spins of about an hour. The weekend after do 60 and then 65 the next. You'll be itching to do the 80 km spin by then.

It's better to finish a training spin wanting more than wishing you are home already.

What an opportunity! Tell your wife that you have been asking around for advice, and everybody is telling you you need a better bike to do 80k. Having entered you for the event, she won't be able to refuse.

+1 on the above advice. You will have no problem. The other piece of advice I would offer is to pace yourself over a new distance. Don't kill yourself trying to keep up with very fast cyclists over the first half, keep something in the tank. If you are feeling good with 20 to 30km to go, then you can up the pace knowing that you are finishing well. That will give you confidence to up the challenge next time. I can almost guarantee you that you will want to do something longer next time.
