went for my Nct Thursday passed it even though they messed up ( that's another Day explanation ) but went to start the car today heard a pop lifted up the Bonnet the battery had exploded, replaced the battery with an old battery to see if the alternator was over charging, then got the alternator checked in a local alternator garage

He said it was definitely not over charging but t leave a meter on to keep an eye on it ,

Since it happened the car does not seem to be running right, its sluggish in second gear going up a hill she seems to be missing and i thought i heard a small back fire going over ramps,

and a bit of chugging going on

would the Nct have done any damage, ?

Or would the battery have done damage inside the car ?

    Any help appreciated thanks.

I think it's time to sell your car, 15 yrs is a good age for a car. You can advertise that it's just passed its nct lol

NCT tests don't damage the car although a worn or damaged part can fail during it.
looks like you still have an electrical problem

the original battery probably failed because it developed a internal short or was over charged by alternator. As you have had alternator tested it is logical battery shorted out.

I presume the acid went all over the engine bay and if you cleaned it off with water then their is a chance that water has gotten into one of the coil packs. that would cause misfiring and car to be sluggish as it not running on all cylinders

It would be worth checking all the heavy wiring from the battery connections to both earth and to the starter motor. don't worry about the smaller wiring as they will be power through a fuse and the fuse would have blown. If you can't find any lose wiring or something that could have shorted out the battery then it must have been battery internal fault.

Don't give up on you avensis just yet as they are a good car if you give them a little TLC

I Totally agree with you i have no intention of giving it up at all,

Was driving it today and it started off been sluggish particulary in the lower gears then after about an hour it was fine even when i was doin 80-100 km once then when i was going over ramps and in lower gear it did give a small misfire happened twice, i was thinking it was dirty petrol, or was my clutch going , but the acid did go over the inside of the bonnet i really only used boiling water near the underneath of were the battery was so unless it hit off anything

but appreciate anynmore advice thanks folks

I would suggest you check the spark leads. If these are the problem you can get them in a breakers yard for very little. Normally I wouldnt suggest second hand leads but the car is 15 and had a recent explosion so no point puting a lot into it.

    I have a corolla 1.4 vvti.
When i disconnect battery and reconnect car runs like crap for a few days. It always sorts itself out. Think ecu has to relearn some stuff?
might be same on your avensis.
