LH1360 a CRJ700 from Frankfurt to Katowice landed on an unfinished RWY today at Katowice airport. The airport are building a new parallel RWY, which is unfinished, has no lights, no linage, uneven surface and not due to be certified until 2015.
Theres a link at the bottom but its in Polish, cant find one in English

    I agree, utterly inexcusable.

    How so?

    How so?

Because as professional pilots landing on a runway that has a large x on it is deserving of being fired. If you find it excusable I trust your not an aviation professional.

How did this happen? Surely they were established on the ILS for the correct runway since the other one doesn't "exist"?

I landed here only a few weeks back. I believe the ILS is not working and I did a VOR approach that was a good few degrees offset. That means you come in towards the runway at quite a big angle and not straight in. The weather was quite marginal too but the notams (these notify crew of anything that may affect operations) quite clearly stated there was a new runway being built so don't land on it! When I landed, there were a good few construction vehicles on the new runway so you couldn't mistake it really. There were no markings or X's a few weeks back.

I will say that the old runway has some of the worst grip I've ever experienced, a new runway is badly needed.

    Edit, avherald story.

Theres an X on it now

EDIT : They are gonna disembark the pax from the a/c abd due to there being no taxiways, the a/c is going to take off, do a circuit and land on the proper RWY as they dont have enough fuel for anything else and the bowser can't get to them

It's LH so there won't be much about this in the press but if it was FR....

I did not say I found it excusable merely asked why you found it inexcusable.

    Thanks for the clarification.

Where 2 runways are in proximity I would assume that the pilots should take extra precautions.

    But you never know.

Reminds me of watching an aircraft try to land on runway 05 in Shannon many years ago.

11 degrees of offset for the VOR-Z onto R27 and a stepped descent if you are doing the full procedural approach. Weather doesn't appear to have been much of a factor in this incident if the highlighted metars on avherald tie in with the timing if the LH arrival.

The ILS is notamed as being off air until August (estimated) plus there are notams warning of a new runway being constructed as well as temporary airfield charts in Jeppesen and I presume LIDO which is what Lufty would be using advising of related taxiway closures relating to the works.

Lots of tea and not many biscuits I fear.

Good. All it would have taken is one small piece of construction equipment for this to have been a disaster.

Read somewhere that the plane will have to depart on the unfinished runway as there's no taxiways connecting to the airport

I see at times you have your merits, so to beat throwing the toys from your pram you have 24hrs to think if you wish to remove the above and play by the forum rules.

It's not a hard ask everyone else can do it why cant you?

    From avherald:

On Jul 7th 2014 the aircraft was permitted to depart from the runway under construction and positioned back to Frankfurt as flight LH-9949.
