Petrol car 5k budget

My parents may need to get a second car runaround. They are looking for something safe, comfortable, hatchback, somewhat modern.
    Budget: max 5k euro
Mileage: 10-15k km a year max mainly tipping around short trips
Engine: reasonable power so 1.6 petrol may be the best compromise
Size: 1.6l or less but not some death trap 1.4 focus has to be at least around 100bhp.
Transmission: doesn't matter manual may be better option
    Year: 2005 onwards.

Current winner would be mk5 1.6 golf comfortline with dsg ticks every box. But what else is there as an alternative ?

Not all mark 5s are dsg so be careful. And the manuals gearbox is weak and the fuel economy is terrible for an engine of that size.

If you'd go to a 1.8 a civic might be an option as it's economical and will be reliable.

I was just going to mention a C'eed.

IMO a better option over a Golf.

Yeah, even the 1.4 litre petrol Ceed/i30 have at least 100bhp afaik.

I assumed they were all dsg if auto good to know. I thought the 1.6 was a far superior engine to the 1.4 and a good engine. I'll find out what she thinks of the civic but probably won't go for it.

The ceed below is a good suggestion I don't personally like them but I suppose there grand for what they are and would be fine for pottering around in.

Those petrol golfs aren't the best, you'd be better off with the above mentioned cee'd or civic. Others to consider are the i30 and corolla.

Your Clio is smaller than what the OP is looking for though.
