I see they discontinued the 105 metal pedals and now its only carbon, I used to get the 105 pedals for 42euro every year which was a bargain

R550 looks similar to 105 and is an updated design from the previous R540, but its a composite/plastic material, I know the axle is still steel obviously but I dont like the idea of a plastic pedal body in terms of potential flex

anyone here have experience with the previous generation 105 pedals compared to this new R550?

I know its only another 30euro extra for the carbon but its not much of a weight saving and I like to have fresh pedals every year

The R540s are still available at €27. I have them and they're fine.

I have the R550's on my carbon bike and alloy 105's on my winter bike. There is no difference in them that I can notice and I prefer the look of the R550. I did consider the new carbon 105 pedals but couldn't justify the additional cost for 30g weight difference.

I think Im mixing up the r540's with the non ultegra model that was priced the same as 105

the r540 pedals have a noticeably narrower profile than 105 with less cleat to pedal surface contact. Ive had a few pairs 4 years ago but need something better
