Filled out an application form today for a role.

Asked for my Date of Birth. Now I've no problem giving it but I thought it was against the law to ask due to age discrimination. Am I correct?

It is illegal to discriminate against someone in regard to their age

It is not illegal to ask age

They can tell your age from the year you leave school anyway

    No iirc.

You'd have to prove the data was used to discriminate

There might be a need to seek the age so as to prove they were not employing minors. Apart from that, they cannot make a judgement based on age unless it was very, very related to some specific aspect of the job - eg Acting.

Thanks all. As I said, no problem at all giving it, just thought it was illegal for the employer to ask.

Let's hope I get the job now!

It's quite silly of them to ask unless they really need to, because asking implies they thought it was relevant.

Possibly. Haven't filled an application form out in years. Have just sent CV in.

If for eg the job was in an off licence the applicant has to be 18 to sell alcohol.

So therefore it's relevant in certain circumstances.

Even if they cannot make a judgement based on age because its illiegal

    most companies do
I got a job because 3 years ago, only just turned 18, was for a warehouse job

went into the interview, the first thing your man said to me was, "Basicly John(not my real name) I am looking for someone *young* and who lives near to us, over 100 applications came in when I put up the job advert, but I narrowed it down to 5 young lads including yourself."

Was a horrible place to work, they were probably hiring younger lads because they wouldnt cause much of a fuss compared to older more experienced people

Most companies take age into account when hiring for physically demanding jobs, and we can't prove it , its a stupid law, may as well get rid of it because its practically impossible to prove unless your the one whos hiring and confess about it
