If someone was to up the budget here by a grand to say 2k, would the suggestions change much from the Punto and clio?

Reason for asking is two Puntos for under a 1k each and bout 8 months each out of both before cost of repairs exceeded the value of the car. First needed bout 400 in repairs to pass NCT but got a year out of it, second, died from dring dual carriageway for 5 months. What would be a reliable car for bout 2K? needs to do bout 20KM of dual carriageway 5 days a week.

Not really, just look out for better examples.

Nothing much springs to mind bar a Yaris for me. Or perhaps a Fiat Panda.

My suggestion in that price range, for a first car that's economical is a Yaris.

Would a 1.0 Yaris handle motorway, even short spin 15 mins and doin 100kmph on such a regular basis? Kinda felt thats what done the second Punto in.

My instinct tells me these are not to be trusted but theres a few 2002/3/4 Opel Tigras and Peugeot 206s, What kind of a rep do the likes of these have?

The Yaris will do whatever you want. Motorways will be absolutely no problem.

You do have a full licence which allows you to drive on motorways, right?:pac:

Not technically a motorway but limit is 120KM for big chunk and described it as motorway for illustrative purposes. Although i'll never know how, i did manage to pick up a full one, and its clean too.

Here's another question, whats the trade off in years, just from a quick search a 2000 Yaris would cost more than a 2003 Peugeut 206.

A yaris costs more than the pug because it's as far superior car. The upside is that you'll get a good bit of your money back come resale time.

    Hyundai Getz:

Good little reliable car that tends to get overlooked.

    Renault scenic? Any issues?

If the above corolla is too big, then how are you contemplating a scenic?

Also scenics are poorly built and aren't that good of a yoke. Which model were you looking at?

You earlier thought a Toyota Corolla was too big for you but you are now considering a Scenic MPV?

Car not for me btw, so my opinion was that the corolla was too big for prospective buyer, but they got a fix on a scenic, i did strongly suggest it was too big, other reasons prevailed for the scenic to be passed on thankfully.

Cant sell the Yaris to her at all, just wont have it.

Trying to get her to get a reliable brand, but she's swayed by the likes of Opel tigra, Puegeot 306 or 206 not sure which one.

Might have found a Ford KA that could solve both needs. Any views on them?

    It's not a Panzer Tank.

They are an easy car to drive.

2k should get a decent Seat Leon.

Be very careful of the Ka, they have a tendency to rust badly.

Ok looked at Ka. Sale agreed. Looks way nicer than most of the ones ive seen. Slight bits of paint damage. Drove nicely from what i could tell. Have put it through mywheels.ie. all clear. The sale is subject to car passing nct. What im wondering is given its under 2k and will have just passed nct is there any need to get a mechanic to check it out?

It's up to you really and how confident you feel in your own ability to judge a cars condition.

I'd say yes it's worth if you plan on keeping it for a while.

I'd want to get the car up on a lift and have a good poke around underneath for signs of serious rust especially around the sills and wings.

Would nct not pick this up?especially structural? Had a look under myself. Tiniest bit near fuel cap but nothing detrimental. Its never perfect buying a car for that amount so as long as its something that wont leave the car a write off 3 months down the line.

It's so hard to find a Ka or Fiesta of that age that isn't rusting so it's up to you really, it's your money at the end of the day, you should get until it's next NCT at least out it anyway.

Not the most reliable yokes in the world, definitely not Honda's finest hour and doesn't live up to honda's excellent reputation.

Give me the previous model any day over one, they are much, much better cars.

They are a very reliable car, did very well in the reliability index for those years, top 10 usual standard for Honda. the 1.4 is a lovely little engine, will go for ever. Lots of space inside, very well laid out, much nicer car on the road.

One or two small issues, but no major faults.

I have had 2 of the previous Hondas and I loved them, now am in one of these newer Hondas and it is a very good driver. faultless.

They are known for a gearbox bearing issue. There was a time when they were done under warranty but that would have long expired on these now.

    Great engine in them though.

thats right, the one I got had a new gearbox put in to it due to the rattle by Honda dealer in Limerick, other than that its fantastic inside, loads of space and very comfortable.

Electric Power steering also gives up the ghost in them.

Nah they are not that well made tbh, yes they have a very good engine but by Honda standards they are a poor enough car. Imo They also have very badly designed suspension towers were there is a great big hole from the wheel wells into the engine bay at either end for the rack to go through. Not only will this let grit and dirt into the engine bay but it also looks weak and poorly finished.

Jd power survey, auto express survey, Which reliability survey, Jd power/what car survey, 99% breakdown free in 2003, the list goes on. a fine car altogether.

There's your problem right there, A car released in late 2000 is hardly going to develop problems in less than 3 years. Those surveys are worthless as a result.

From my experience of them I wouldn't call them "a fine car altogether", they are only OK in my experience. Then again I'm basing that on real experience rather than decade old surveys carried out when these cars were practically new on the market.

And I am as well, bought it off my mechanic, and driving away in it with no problem. a fine car altogether, so, have you owned one?

two relatives of mine and a close friend of mine had them. All of them went through gearbox bearings and all suffered eps failure. The older model was far better made and never went wrong.

these ep civic couldn't live up to that fault free reputation.

they should have bugged john moloneys to get it fixed.

it is in a different class to the 90's civics, but i believe Hondas intention with the 2001- civic was to move towards a more spacious conservative yoke for small families with this model. could this be your dislike for the shape etc?

No I actually don't mind the shape, especially the facelift. I just don't think they are that well made is all.

the 90's civics were great yokes with class leading suspension, build quality and reliability.
