As the title says , Is it possible to claim social welfare and be self employed at the same time , at least till the business can stand on its own 2 feet . I have an idea i would like to get moving on that requires no capital and will provide an income but wont act on it if it means i loose my payment , i would register as self employed etc etc and do it all above board ..

    Thanks

no, it's one of the many ridiculous flaws in the system.

a self employed person could have many staff, if their business goes under all the staff can sign on but he/she can't.

    Utter lunacy.

This is not factual. A self employed person can apply for jobseekers allowance and receive a jsa payment.

If you are currently in receipt of jobseekers allowance arrange to see a case officer and speak to them about the prospect of applying for back to work enterprise allowance.

Im self employed one day a week and claim jobseekers allowance.

My sister is self employed and claims jsa so

    The answer is YES

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Thats brilliant , thanks a million for this ..... that type of system would suit me perfect if it can be done ... at least until i get established . Without prying into your personal affairs could you PM me / or put it on here how/who you contacted in order to do this .. is it the same system as previous comments like a reduced payment over 3 or 4 years ..

    No

Because my work is structured at 1 day per week what happens is I earn 60 euro per week and 57 Euro gets deducted off my JSA so I get 131 JSA per week. My sister is different. They assess her accounts annually.

It might be a good idea for you to get some advice on it from social welfare. I know in some areas there are local development companies who can offer advice.

Ha Ha , this is great ... I was informed by a friend that this system was available alright almost on a "Euro for Euro" basis if you will , earn a euro have a euro deducted but when i asked social welfare they could give me no information on it so i didint want to press them on it in case i brought bother on myself .... that is what prompted me to post this question in the first place .... you have given me the answer i was hoping for :) . can i ask are you self employed or working for someone .
