Bryton Rider 20

Following the recent Bargain Alert, I got one of these.

I took it out today for the first time. I also ran Strava on my Android for comparison.

    Some Gripes:
The Bryton takes quite a long time to find satellites, then it dropped out for a while and rejoined, making it look like I cycled as the crow flies at 71km/hr through some buildings. It's data is also a little bit less reliable, it seems. The map of my movement is a bit jittery when compared it to the data collected from the Android. The Bryton also thinks I'm quicker in terms of average speed and segment results than my phone.

Anyone else have a Bryton? Had any trouble with receiving satellites? That's my main concern.

    Cheers

Reviews frequently mention that it takes a while to synchronise the first time you use it but should be much quicker thereafter as long as you don't move more than a couple of hundred miles for your next start point.

Cool! That's quite a relief. Thanks.

All GPS devices will work like this, Phone, Garmin, Bryton etc. They have to initialise your position the first time and find where the satellite are, once they have you basic position it's fast to find the satellites the next time.

You need to wait till it has 3 bars of reception before starting. it logs every 4 seconds vs 1 second on strava for instance, so they might not tally 100%, but it's pretty close for me.

If you are using a speed sensor then you need to match the Tyre size correctly as well.

Other than water getting into it, it's a great unit

The Bryton logs your position every second so it should be fairly accurate. I had a 20 and upgraded to a 35. Trees and tall buildings interfere with satellite signals and it does drop speed readings now and then but picks it up quickly again. I was more than happy with the Bryton 20 and only upgraded as I got the 35 for a price I couldn't refuse

Got one recently too... Was also thinking of starting a thread like this! No issues picking up GPS for me, but I was wondering how easy it is to upload files and transfer to Strava? Bear in mind, I'm a technophobe. Just about getting the hand of using the device itself now!

    its dead easy
    plug in bryton
    go to bryton program
    manage files
    save files to computer
click the files you want to save
    save as .tcx files
log in to strava and upload straight from computer.

    simples

    Simples... Famous last words!

I'll report back with my amusing ineptitude.

No need for this anymore. Upload to Bryton, select file, then click on upload to strava. Job done.

i also got one of these from the bargin alerts and i have noticed a few issues with it related to strava.

Firstly, it grossly underestimates the time per segment. I went on a ride recently with two others who had garmin edge 500s. We rode together for the whole thing yet on some segments my bryton was suggesting that i was over 2 minutes faster than the other guys, when i very clearly wasn't. :o

The longer the segment on strava the worse it is.
e.g on a 2 mile segment it is saying that i am 11 seconds faster but on a 8 mile segment i am over 70 seconds faster. This all despite the fact that we rode right behind one another for the entire ride. On every single segment strava was saying that i was significantly faster

Not sure if the problem is with strava or bryton but i hope they fix it soon. Feel very guilty when i upload it and have had to delete a few rides because i was given some KOMs when i clearly didn't beat the record.

I hope other people with brytons aren't using to this to their advantage by gaining KOMS that they don't deserve :(

I gotta correct you there, it logs every 4 seconds and theres no way to adjust it.

It seems there are discrepencies between all of the devices. Maybe yours is the correct one, flying11!? In reality, probably not though. If you ever upgrade to a Garmin 500, you can use all your Bryton segments as training targets!

My Bryton did a strange thing last week, where for the first 20 minutes of my ride, it thought I was about 25meters east of my actual position. Which is a pain in the arse cos I busted a gut trying to get a PB on a short climb. I'm pretty slow so I'm never going to win any KOMs, even with a GPS that gives me a few seconds.
